As a young teen he later entered the arts of dance (breaking and house), and dj’ing (disco and deep tech) at local parties. As Marcel continued to learn of other styles of music and dance, his selection of music continued to expand, while becoming more refined for dj’ing these new genres, particularly with electronic and world music. As a musician, Marcel also occasionally performs live Afro/Arabic based percussion in his dj sets, adding an organic feel to his music curation for the dancer. Marcel has Dj’d and danced at ecstatic dance events from Tulum to Haifa, from Tel-Aviv to Guatemala, from Nevada City to Sacramento, and is bringing new vibes from his global experiences to his music curation for his ecstatic dance dj sets. Ecstatic dance is typically practiced without a phone or camera in sight. It’s an important guideline to make sure every dancer is able to sink into the moment and express authentically without worry, and it works. The only thing is, if you *want* to share your free and authentic movement with the world a little bit— say, to encourage them to join in the joy— you don’t get many opportunities to capture the truly authentic practice. It’s not the same degree of letting go I sink into after the room has filled up with amazing souls and I’ve dropped completely into presence with my body, but this moment at sound check was genuine ecstatic dance for me. I was mentally visualizing as if the real dance had already begun. I was surrendering my body to its authentic movement with the music. I was unconcerned with how I looked. Just moving. That kind of flow state, when you’re deep in it, is incredible. It keeps me coming back to the practice week after week. All the while, I was also listening to the sound balance coming out of the system to make sure things were right where I wanted them. This track is my new favorite for sound checks because the big booming sub bass tells me what’s going on in the low end and the various layered percussion instruments sound at their best when the highs are coming through with clarity. “Ever Forward” is an ecstatic dance track coming soon as part of my debut album, “Making Contact.” It’s been polished up and remastered since the last time I gave an audience a taste. QUINTESSENCE // Music Facilitator Quintessence (Lexi Battle, she/her) is one of the most diverse and musically nuanced acts you’ll find performing today. In addition to being a lead DJ and organizer of the “Ecstaturday” Ecstatic Dance in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, she is also a MOVEMENT resident DJ. As a highly multidisciplinary DJ and music producer, she brings lessons and influences from each of the music scenes she’s involved with into all of the others, giving her a unique perspective that allows her to hybridize the elements that work from the different scenes and let them inform each other. Quintessence is a master of the intentional dance journey. She begins with tempos and rhythms designed to warm the body up while the melodic content creates emotional depth and intrigue that set the stage for what’s to come. Each stage successively builds on what we’ve experienced in the last, taking us somewhere new that still feels part of the same story. The crescendos and climaxes interplay with periods of moderate rest and reflection to create a series of waves through various energies and moods. Finally, we come to the sentimental landing and closing stages where we can integrate what we’ve experienced as the journey nears its end, perhaps indulging in one final burst of joy or artistic expression before sending us off to what’s next.
