Although they were classified as one tribe by European colonizers, these classifications were often wrong, conflating Native languages & cultures, and misunderstanding Indigenous societal structures. “The written history of the native people in this area was always left to the non-native community to write, and with their ignorance of Lenape ways and language, their documentation was seldom accurate. Therefore, we rely on our oral history more than the writings found in the history books.” - The Ramapaough Lenape Nation / Neighborhoods that were once sites of Canarsee community include Red Hook (Sassian), Gowanus, Bay Ridge (Nyack), Brooklyn Heights (Ihpetonga), the Navy Yard, Boerum Hill, & Gravesend. Non-Native accounts record the Canarsee people as “extinct” by the 1820s, their population having been decimated by European colonial state & company-sanctioned genocide. But the Canarsee are part of the Lenape Diaspora, which, due to forced migration, includes large communities (including five federally recognized tribes) in Ontario, Wisconsin, & Oklahoma, as well as throughout Lënapehóking.
