My thoughts on shark nets… following the recent spate of deaths (humpback calves, dolphins, seals and all other non-target species). Your thoughts?

I’ve found Jane Goodall’s loss so devastating… BUT it also made me really sit up and start again. These past few years have been, shall we say, a little funky. My environmentalism has always been such a big part of my identity but I just got into ā€œkeep my head above waterā€ mode. So, while I wasn’t knocking about kicking baby seals, I wasn’t ā€œbeing the changeā€ like I always strive to be. But life has started to turn around and get better, and then Jane passed away and I’m back. All in. I can’t believe that climate change skepticism is now an actual thing… and I don’t know what will happen… but let’s give it a go. So, here, if you’re feeling lost uninspired, some of Jane’s prerecorded final words. What a dame!

Found this video and it made me laugh. What an amazing moment up at Quobba Station… up in warm waters for breeding ground before heading back to Antartictic waters šŸ‹. It made me think of that poor baby humpback that died yesterday off our eastern coast after becoming tangled in a shark net. The tragic carcass will now - ironically - attract All The Sharks. Maybe a skilled debater could make a case for shark nets if they worked… but they are totally ineffective. Sharks can swim over and around them and sadly often get caught as well as non target species like whales, dugongs, turtles, dolphins and more. You know, the more ā€œcharmingā€ marine life without the bitey mouths. But please remember - FISH ARE FRIENDS. They all deserve to swim free. If you ever get a chance to advocate against shark nets, please do. In protest, in voting, in conversation. Let’s protect our marine life so maybe one day you get to see what we saw in the above video. I challenge you to sound more excited! šŸ˜‚ #humpback #humobackwhales #sharknetskill #saynotosharknets #oceanlife #protectouroceans #saveourseas #plasticfree #nsw #nswwhale #nswhumpback #babyhumpback

Think about Jane Goodall’s mum today too; because without her we wouldn’t have Jane (and I don’t mean just biologically). When Jane was asked to fly to Tanzania back in 1960 the British government insisted she couldn’t go alone… so Margaret up and went with her. What a brave thing to do; from cold UK to a hot foreign land to study chimpanzees… way before the internet could answer all your questions. What a generous pebble that created immeasurable ripples. In a world full of Karens, be a Margaret! I hope they’re back together again.

ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹ Ouch. Vale the magnificent Dr Jane Goodall, one of the most important voices of our time. One of my favourite things about Jane was her ability to meld science with stories. She was ridiculed for giving the animals she studied names… but this eventually revolutionised animal studies in her assertion that animals have distinct personalities and feelings. Her discoveries changed how we defined ā€œmanā€ and she was the first person to document chimps using tools. Off on the next great adventure. Thank@you for inspiring countless people - including the one typing - to advocate for animals and the places they live. I hope Rusty bounded over to you up there and that you’re now sitting with your mum and David Greybeard looking over Gombe from the clouds ✨

Oh, possum! On the way to my house, my saint of a mother @henty_homestead drove past an adult Western Ringtail possum that had been hit by a car šŸ’”. The weather was quite wild so she almost didn’t stop but something told her to double back to check the pouch. As she checked, this tiny little hand reached up and grabbed onto her thumb; Disney, take notes for future tear-provoking scenes. We warmed the little poss up on a heat bag and then off it went to the vet. PSA: all Aussie vets will take in native animals and get them sorted.Anyway, a couple of thoughts: 1. If you ever pass a marsupials that’s been hit by a car, please check the pouch. This poor little creature - whose local population is decreasing - would’ve died a sad, preventable death. 🦘 🐨 šŸ¦” (pretend that last one is an echidna!) 🦔 (and that the badger is a wombat!). 2. Are you in a high road kill area? (I’m looking at you Tasmania). Lately I’ve seen SO MANY of these beautiful possums that have been hit and it hurts my heart. Have you seen any effective local campaigns that have reduced wildlife fatality on the roads? I remember in Bhutan they used to have wildlife overpasses … literally bridges over roads to allow the animals safe passage. But I’d love to hear other ideas. Hope this little Joey pulls through! ā¤ļø
