Coast of Hope - 650km for the Ocean 🌊🚴‍♂️ From May 25th to June 8th, we are turning pedal strokes into protection for our seas! Manuel from Ecosystem Bumi will cycle 650km with 6,000m of elevation gain from Bali to Labuan Bajo to raise vital funds for the Bumi Tacik Golo program. Along his journey, he will collect the "hopes" of various coastal residents for the ocean and deliver them to the Bumi Tacik Golo communities in Lenteng to inspire local and global action. A Cycling Journey full of Hope for the Ocean 🌊🚴 #cyclingforocean I am very excited to announce that I will be cycling from Bali to Labuan Bajo in celebration of World Ocean Day and to raise funds for a community based marine coastal conservation program in Lenteng. @ecosystembumi in collaboration with @konservasitacik has launched the Bumi Tacik Golo Program this year to empower the local community in protecting their marine ecosystem. 🪸 The bicycle tour will be an adventure of a lifetime and more importantly tto remind us all that the future of our oceans is still in our hands. River Dolphin Ranger Program | Q1 2026 Recap 🐬 👉 Dari Januari hingga Maret 2026, tim ranger kami, bekerja sama dengan @yayasan_rasi dan @balaipkpontianak melakukan 24 patroli siang dan 12 patroli malam dengan menempuh jarak total sekitar 3.198 km untuk memantau habitat pesut mahakam di Kecamatan Kota Bangun, Indonesia. 👉 Selama patroli, tim ranger kami melihat dan mencatat 17 pesut mahakam dengan ukuran kelompok yang terdiri dari dua hingga delapan individu. 👉 Pada bulan Februari, tim kami juga melakukan penyelamatan seekor pari air tawar raksasa muda yang terperangkap jaring sawaran. 👉 Aktivitas penangkapan ikan ilegal terus tercatat di Sungai Mahakam, khususnya di Kabupaten Kota Bangun. Tim mengidentifikasi 24 insiden penangkapan ikan menggunakan listrik dan sawaran sekaligus berlanjutnya lalu lintas tongkang batubara terus tercatat di sepanjang habitat pesut mahakam. Terima kasih atas dukungan Anda dalam melindungi pesut mahakam! 🙏 — 👉 From January to March 2026, our River Dolphin Ranger Team, in collaboration with @yayasan_rasi and @balaipkpontianak conducted 24 day patrols and 12 night patrols, with the estimation of covering a total distance around 3,198 km monitoring key dolphin habitats in the Kota Bangun Sub-District, Indonesia. 👉 During the patrols, the team sighted and recorded 17 pesut mahakam with group sizes consisting of two to eight individuals. 👉 On February, our team also make an unexpected rescue to save and relocate a juvenile giant freshwater stingray that have been caught in sawaran net. 👉 Illegal fishing activities continue to be recorded in the Mahakam River, particularly in Kota Bangun District. The team identified 24 illegal fishing incidents this quarter, including electrofishing and sawaran with coal barges continue to be recorded along pesut mahakam transit corridor. The students of SMK Muhammadiyah Golo Mori were also involved in role-plays to gain new perspectives through the lens of sustainable tourism and economics. They were given questions on how to balance the economic chain so that students, fishermen, and entrepreneurs can thrive in a mutually beneficial system without damaging the marine ecosystem. 2025 Coal Barge Survey: Preliminary Findings & Progress Update 🐬🚢 From June 10 to 15, 2025, @ecosystembumi and @yayasan_rasi @balaipkpontianak conducted surveys along the Mahakam and Pela River areas to understand the impact of coal barge activity on dolphin behavior and their habitat. Here’s what the preliminary findings uncover: 👉 One passing large vessel carrying a coal barge can threaten dolphin behavior and habitat. 👉 Large amounts of passing coal barges have a significant impact by disrupting the dolphins' echolocation through noise pollution. 👉 We also observed other risks, such as degradation of river habitat from waste contamination and barge intrusion into the tributaries. To mitigate these threats, our partner @yayasanrasi recommends: 👉 Lowering the amount and time needed for vessels to pass through the habitat of the river dolphins on a day-to-day basis. 👉 Implementing a recommendation to ban coal barges in the tributary areas. The survey also included research to record acoustic recordings, distance, surfacing patterns, and photo identification of the spotted population of individual dolphins around a limited area connecting the Mahakam River to Lake Semayang and the swamp 🐬 Considering the limited habitat and population of the river dolphins in the Mahakam River, alongside the high amount of coal barge vessels passing through, it’s crucial to bring attention to these threats to save the critically endangered river dolphin population. The analysis of the 2025 Coal Barge Survey is still ongoing, and the full report will be shared once finalized. Kegiatan dihadiri oleh Kepala Dinas Lingkungan Hidup dan Pertanahan, Ketua Kecamatan Komodo, Kepala Desa Golo Mori, dan berbagai tokoh dan anggota masyarakat dengan total 36 peserta. Dalam rangka memperingati Hari Perempuan Internasional, kami diundang untuk berpartisipasi dalam acara “Women Taking Action” di Maya Sanur Resort yang diselenggarakan Konsulat Jenderal Australia di Bali. @ecosystembumi membuka booth yang menyoroti peran dan inklusivitas perempuan dalam beberapa program kami. Mulai dari komunitas perempuan sepanjang Sungai Mahakam yang memerangi jaring hantu melalui workshop hingga pendidikan melalui konservasi di Kepulauan Bangkaru. Kami juga menampilkan program Bumi Tacik Golo yang didukung oleh Direct Aid Fund @konjenbali Ini menjadi kesempatan untuk menunjukkan betapa signifikan dan pentingnya peran perempuan dalam melindungi, melestarikan, dan menjaga ekosistem kita untuk generasi mendatang. From the women’s community combating ghost nets through workshops along the Mahakam River to education through conservation on the Bangkaru Islands. We also showcase the Bumi Tacik Golo program that is supported by @konjenbali Direct Aid Program. It was an opportunity to show how significant and crucial women’s roles are in protecting, conserving, and safeguarding our ecosystems for generations to come. A panel was also held with several panellists from various backgrounds, ranging from women in government institutions to NGOs, to further discuss gender equality and women’s roles.
