Birds Underwater headed down to Tampa to see the new Manatee Care area!🌿
We were able to check up on some of Florida’s beloved gentle giants that are currently undergoing care! At the moment, they have 26 manatees. It was said that this is due to the extraordinary cold winter that we experienced, causing many manatees to become cold stressed. You can connect with the David A. Straz Jr. Manatee Critical Care Center patients and witness the Zoo’s life-saving efforts up close!💚
Zoo Tampa has become a leader in the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of Florida species! Thanks for always helping our Gentle Giants! 🙌🏻

Ever wonder what manatees do all day? Eat. A lot. 🥬💚
These gentle giants are herbivores and spend 6–8 hours a day munching on seagrass, algae, and freshwater plants. In fact, a manatee can eat 10–15% of its body weight every single day, that’s up to 100 pounds of vegetation!🌿
They don’t eat fish or other animals, just underwater “salads” that help keep Florida’s rivers and springs healthy. Slow swimmers with serious appetites, manatees are basically underwater lawnmowers, cruising, floating, and grazing about their day!🌱
Big bodies, gentle hearts, and nonstop snacks! That’s the Manatee Way!💚

Birds Underwater had a great time this weekend visiting the new @motemarinelab Science Education Aquarium (SEA) in Sarasota, Fl. 🌊
“Mote Marine Laboratory scientists provide a trusted source of data for manatee conservation at the state and federal levels, while educating people about how to protect manatees”!🙌🏻💙
We checked out the manatees new habitat and educational area within the Florida Waters Exhibit. MOTE currently has two manatees:
•Buffett, named after Jimmy Buffett, enjoys training sessions and soaking up the sun!☀️
•Lou, who lost most of his tail due to a boating accident in 2000. He is still able to navigate the water by paddling with his flippers! Lou enjoys eating and snacking throughout the day, especially on sweet potatoes! 🍠
