AKF has officially welcomed residents to Denmark’s first straw-based residential development. 🌾
Søbredden in Kirkebjerg Søpark includes 13 terraced homes built with the prefabricated EcoCocon straw wall system alongside timber cladding, hemp and seagrass-based materials.
Part of Denmark’s “4 to 1 Planet” initiative, the project marks the first time a professional Danish developer has delivered a full residential development using timber-straw-based construction systems.
The project achieved an independently verified carbon footprint of 8.1 kg CO₂eq/m²/year, dropping to 5.4 kg CO₂eq/m²/year using updated 2025 emission factors. That is 53% lower than the Danish housing average.
More importantly, all 13 homes sold out before completion.
Projects like this highlight something the industry is rediscovering: people respond differently to natural, bio-based living environments.
Indoor acoustics, humidity regulation, material tactility, and overall living comfort have a direct impact on how homes feel — and ultimately on their desirability.
The real challenge now is to accelerate the number of developers capable of delivering low-carbon housing repeatedly, commercially, and at scale. 🏗️
Straw bale construction has been steadily expanding beyond isolated applications, positioning itself as a low-carbon alternative to conventional materials across larger, more integrated building systems.
Across Europe, projects in Denmark, Sweden, and Slovakia illustrate this shift. Each integrates prefabricated straw bale panels by @eco.cocon into hybrid timber systems—applied in housing, multi-storey buildings, and even industrial facilities—demonstrating how straw can operate at scale while combining passive performance, affordability, and on-site energy strategies.

We’ve been listening. 👂
For years, you’ve been asking us to make EcoCocon more accessible. Faster to order. Easier to install. Something you don’t need a crane for.
So we went back to basics. 🌾
Introducing EcoCocon STRÄHPANEL — our first ever flat-pack straw panel system. Everything you need to build your own certified, high-performance wall panel, delivered straight to your door. Straw. Timber frame. Instructions.
Same thermal performance. Same fire resistance. Same acoustic properties. ✅
Just some assembly required.
We’re not going to pretend it’s been easy to get here. 😅 Seventeen years of factory precision, automated compression, quality certification — and we’re putting it in a box. But the customer is always right.
STRÄHPANEL.
Available now in B2C, B2B, and flat-pack. 📦
*Hydraulic press not included.
This is what public architecture looks like when materials actually matter. 💚
EcoEspai was never meant to be just another public building.
It was conceived as a place — where administration, everyday life, work and culture meet under one roof.🏛️
In plan, the building reads like a hand. Or an octopus. 🐙
An organic footprint set against a rigid urban grid, shaped by climate, use and public life rather than by form alone.
Everything happens on the ground floor: municipal services, coworking, learning spaces, meetings and small public events. The layout is deliberate — encouraging overlap, encounters and shared use. 🤝
At the heart of the building are 256 EcoCocon straw wall panels. 🌾
Not as an experiment, but as a clear statement: bio-based materials and prefabricated systems are fully capable of meeting the demands of contemporary public architecture.
Straw for insulation.
Timber for structure.
Clay, wood fibre and lime to complete a fully breathable envelope.
Structure and installations are left visible on purpose — honest, readable, slightly punk.
A building that doesn’t explain itself with signs, but through how it is made.
EcoEspai is not a showcase.
It’s a working public building — quietly demonstrating how we can build differently today.
