I restored this 20-button Anglo concertina and tuned the reeds down from C/G to Bb/F. It’s missing most of the interesting notes, but you can still persuade a tune out of it. Braeroy Road by Donald Grant (I think) #concertina #irishconcertina #angloconcertina

Settled on a new capacitor value to adjust the bucket brigade chip clock rate to give me the option of much longer (and dirtier, more band-limited) delays. The switch lets me flip between them. Analogue BBD crunches up nicely when the feedback goes critical and does that HPF thing better than you normally get from a BBD. Not a route one dub delay (you’d still want a Space Echo-like thing) but great flavour to have on an extra buss. Edit: you normally don't get any accretion of HF energy with a BBD - it always tends darker, effectively LPF'ing itself every generation. So I think what's happening here is that because the audible aliasing threshold is lower due to the extended delay/reduced clock rate, it's that (usually horrible) aliasing that's being fed back, coming out as nice, soft, snowstormy, upper-mids mess. In Metron's dub delay I had to code this behaviour with a one-pole highpass filter, whereas here I get it for free! #dubtechno #dubdelay #analogdelay #delaypedal

Oh no! That didn’t help in the slightest. So the issue isn’t the clock rate, necessary, but maybe some LPF earlier in the chain. So I put the original cap back in…and then I thought why not sacrifice the inaccessible bandwidth to get a ~2x longer delay? Et voila! I’ll try to rig a switch so I can flip between modes. #dubtechno #delaypedal #analogdelay

This week on Dub Science Hour: wouldn’t it be nice if my hi-hats didn’t get completely ignored by the vintage BBD delay? With BBDs delay time costs you bandwidth so if I want to increase the upper frequency to include where my hats live around 6k, I’ll need to clock the timer faster, reducing the minimum delay time but allowing hats to be heard through the delay. Not sure if the unit is dodgy or it’s just underclocked by design, or if such a short delay would even be useful, but it’s worth a bash. Time to start swapping capacitors #dubtechno #delaypedal #analogdelay

A bit of the oul' dub techno with that Maplin delay box and the Wasp. The bucket brigade circuit kicks out this constant, anxious, rainy noise even when it's idle, and I love it. Not to be confused with the constant horrible lawnmower noise it was making before I repaired it. #dubtechno #analoguesynth #analogsynth

Repaired the transformer in this analogue bucket-brigade delay from the early 80s and gave it some new knobs that are easier to twiddle. Noisy boy. Instant #berlinschool and #dubtechno vibes

My auntie has a new play at @livetheatrenewcastle soon, in which pioneering Newcastle-born feminist Mary Astell and Virginia Woolf meet in the afterlife. Very on-brand! I think some tickets are still available but it’s also in print from (appropriately enough) Bloomsbury

It’s got a massive number 5 because it’s the most common number. Been out for 3 weeks in Japan, where’s yours?
