Harvest 2024.
All in before the big rain, and thanks to a great crew of friends and family who helped bring in our teeny tiny crop of grapes. Our one ferment has already kicked off and is tasting delicious. Obviously the year was a bit heartbreaking to lose potential crop from cold damaged buds but the vines came back healthy and strong and we are lucky to not need any replants. Couldn’t have asked for a better season for recovery and looking forward to a fresh start in 2025.

Happenings lately.
From budbreak at the end of April to shoots growing past the top wire, May has been a month of plenty of growth 🌱
We are trying out compost tea, instead of biodynamic preps to boost microbial life.
Chip and Dale have been eating and fertilizing their way around the vines.
Rua caught her first marmot…she’s now on her 4th 🙌
The whole team did wires today. We’ve figured out a pretty efficient system.
Saw a few flowers in the vines…wowee has this season has caught up for lost time!

Biochar!
We’ve been experimenting with making our own biochar using the cone pit method.
Our vine prunings are burnt in an oxygen poor environment to encourage the production of biochar over ash.
Biochar is a great soil amendment which improves soil health by providing a habitat for microorganisms in addition to enhancing soil structure and water retention.

HEADLINERS AT THIS IS WINE SCHOOL
We are so excited to introduce a new “class” to our curriculum: headliners. These are winegrowers and figures in wine from around the world with whom we share a deep affinity and values: spreading knowledge and delicious, thoughtful wine.
Each Headliners evening will feature a different grower or producer (Kelsey is our first, and we couldn’t be more excited!) who will lead an hour class/tasting of their wines, and then we move the furniture and open the space up as a wine bar for the rest of the evening for everyone to chat and get to know our very special guest.
Kelsey Rufiange of @else_wines and @echobayvineyard will be with us on March 28th and will be leading us through some very exciting new wines and an overview of how she does what she does. See you at 6pm at our space in @nancygoyaya in Chinatown, Vancouver.
