The monopod really saved us on a lot of these shoots. Takashi Hara was DOPing today, and it was honestly so much fun casting the “Lowlies” for this chase scene.
You’d be surprised how many people became part of this made up gang. Non actors, passersby, even tattooed gym junkies (arguably the best kind). Microbudget sets attract real energy if you’re open to it.
Here we’re just blocking the shot before kicking off the first take.
As an actor and director in a sequel film, juggling multiple roles can feel like a mental puzzle. But over time, it sharpens your instincts. You stop overthinking, trust your preparation, and become a better filmmaker overall.
3 tips for slashies juggling actor and director roles:
1️⃣ Lock your director brain early.
Make your shot list and performance intentions clear before stepping in front of the camera so you’re not deciding everything mid take.
2️⃣ Delegate without ego.
Trust your DOP and key crew to watch what you physically cannot while you’re acting. This is survival, not weakness.
3️⃣ Protect your energy.
Switching roles is mentally expensive. Build in micro pauses between setups so you can reset instead of running on fumes.
Being a slashie is messy, demanding, and exhausting. But if you stick with it, it trains you to see the whole film at once.
