During pre-production of this short film « R+J » we aimed for an image that felt soft and organic while retaining precision.
That’s led us to the Panavision Primo REOP 4, suggested by Benjamin Bourla (@benjamin_leinster )(at #Panavision Paris) paired with the Alexa Mini LF, to study how this optical treatment performs on a large-format sensor.
The REOP 4 coating creates a controlled halation in the highlights, preserving the Primo’s sharpness while introducing a gentle, film-like bloom in night and backlit scenes. It delivered a natural glow without heavy diffusion — We only added a 1/8 Black Pro-Mist on a few night shots, which was more than enough.
Shooting at 1600 EI added texture and depth, improving micro-contrast and highlight roll-off while maintaining tonal integrity.
On the Mini LF, I used focal lengths that fully covered the sensor or cropped slightly when needed, keeping the optical rendering consistent.
In daylight, especially when the sun shines from behind, the REOP 4 coating alone produced a subtle halation that gave the image warmth and soft look.
This approach was made possible by Panavision’s expertise, with optics that perfectly supported the project’s goal of achieving a film-like organic feel in large format through the character of this distinctive coating.
