My staff attended Oakland Roots AAPI Heritage Night and a winning game, celebrating the cultures, histories, and contributions of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community. The event brought people together through soccer, cultural celebration, and community pride while uplifting AAPI voices and organizations in Oakland. It was a meaningful reminder of the importance of representation, community connection, and shared moments of victory.

EBALDC is excited to celebrate two back-to-back American Planning Association (APA) CA Northern wins for our TOD master plans!
1. Implementation Award - Lake Merritt BART Station Area Plan
2. Urban Design Award - North Berkeley BART TOD
We’re thankful for the 50+ community partners, agencies, and consultants who made these legacy projects possible!
APA’s recognition celebrates EBALDC’s deeply held values in community-centered design and the importance of connecting mixed-income neighborhoods to affordable homes, reliable transit, and community gathering spaces.
--
For the Lake Merritt/Chinatown Station Area Plan, the award highlights the Oakland Chinatown neighborhood for its early and ongoing community engagement processes, with over $1 billion in community investment since the plan was adopted in 2014.
Implementation leads include BART, City of Oakland, Oakland Housing Authority, Alameda County, Metropolitan Transportation Commission, Oakland Chinatown Coalition, private sector partners, and more!
EBALDC’s involvement dates back to the specific planning process 18+ years ago and our BART station master plan with Strada. Special thanks to EBALDC’s team under construction now, led by PYATOK architecture + urban design, EinwillerKuehl Landscape Architecture, Cahill Contractors, and more.
---
For the North Berkeley BART Station TOD, the award celebrates the community advocacy, objective design standards, City’s first-ever AB 2011 entitlements, and design team’s master plan.
Agency initiatives were led by BART, City of Berkeley, Berkeley Housing Authority, North Berkeley Now!, and more, plus EBALDC’s development partnerships with Insight Housing, BRIDGE Housing Corporation, and AvalonBay Communities.
Urban design leads include David Baker Architects, Yes Community Architects, Einwiller Kuehl Landscape Architects, Rhoades Planning Group, Raimi + Associates an Alta Company, Fehr & Peers, and more.

EBALDC celebrated Earth Day early at the City of Milpitas' Earth Day Festival last weekend! We joined over 25+ community organizations and City Departments, including our partners and tabling neighbors, VTA, for this event.
Tabling included engagement around design feedback, and we had the opportunity to meet Planning Commissioner Dipak Awasthi, City Council Member Evelyn Chua, and staff from the City’s Public Works Department!
Shoutout to EBALDC team (Linda, Olinda, and James!) for community building and our partners at Mithun (Anne & Kristen!) for a prolific engagement event.

As part of the programming funded by California Natural Resources Agency's Youth Community Access grant, EBALDC recruited 4 youth in junior and high school to be Youth Outdoor Access Leadership Interns!
Another community access project through the Natural Resources Agency to improve youth access to natural and cultural resources--they get to explore California cultural and natural resources such as Lawrence Hall of Science, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Sacramento River, California Academy Sciences, and Yosemite, while providing youth access to leadership opportunities through career readiness.
They participate in on-going Learning Circles to engage in field trip planning, field trip debriefs, and leadership development. As part of the leadership development component, interns have completed Live Free’s “Youth Voice, Land & Liberation” curriculum, which integrates the topics of equity-centered storytelling, digital advocacy, and environmental justice.

2026 is an exciting year for the RLC program, celebrating 15 years of action and community building!
The first RLC meeting was inspired by resident leader, Lynetta Taylor, after attending the Community Leadership Institute. RLC has since been impactful with community-focused projects ranging from resident voter registration to clean park initiatives to helping with food distribution for neighbors.

Last week, EBALDC partnered with @@sfbayarearapidtransit and Metropolitan Transportation Commission to co-host the AB 185 Spring Joint Meeting of CA HCD, CalSTA, and CARB leadership and staff, celebrating successful implementation of the state’s AHSC, TIRCP, and REAP 2.0 funding programs, as we toured construction progress at EBALDC’s Lake Merritt/Chinatown BART (Clara E. Chan Lee Residences) and East 12th Street (Sen Lake) TOD projects.
These public private partnerships demonstrate the power of aligning housing, transit, and climate investments. At EBALDC, we’re proud to help drive these efforts from vision to reality!
