Our 4th annual Black Earth Day was a smashing success! 115 volunteers came together and collected 191 bags of trash (1660 lbs!) and 660 lbs. of green waste along the 7th Street Corridor.
This yearâs cleanup was hosted on the 26,000 sq ft. lot next to the Barn, and the future site of our Estherâs Garden project. Attendees were invited to share their vision for the amenities theyâd like to see as part of our community-led development process.
Black Earth Day was also the kickoff launch of our two-year, $10 million investment campaign aimed at revitalizing West Oaklandâs historic 7th Street corridor to address decades of government neglect through community-driven urban development and sustainable local investment.
A huge shoutout to all of our community partners who made this yearâs Black Earth Day possible: @soulblendscoffee@the_crucible@mandelapartners@rootvolumecooperative@liscbayarea@westoaklandeip@oaklandgleaners@lincoln1883 , @_commonvision_@7thwestoakland@serialmaterial@sterlingartsf@oakland
TOMORROW: We invite the community to join the Mandela Station (West Oakland BART) Development Team for a community meeting to receive the latest updates for the proposed development.
The meeting will take place on Thursday, May 7th from 6:30-8:30pm at Beth Eden Baptist Church (1183 10th St, Oakland, CA 94607) RSVP link in bio! đ
CONTEXT: On Oaklandâs Earth Day, approximately 72 trees were red tagged along 7th Street and around the West Oakland BART station.
The response from across the West Oakland community has been immediate and unified: the scale and approach of this tree removal is unacceptable and unnecessary. The core problem is not that the community disagrees with the approved plan. The core problem is that the red tags on the ground do not match the approved plan.
We thank the City of Oakland for promptly pausing permits for this tree removal, and are calling on the City and BART to correct specific mismatches between the red-tagged trees and the approved Preliminary Development Plan.

Community meeting scheduled for Thursday, May 7 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm! Location: Beth Eden Baptist Church. RSVP at bit.ly/bart-trees-meeting
UPDATE: the permit application for tree removal is on pause due to community opposition! 7th St Thrives has put together a list of recommendations for the developers and the City to preserve our urban forest: check it out and sign on at 7thstreetoakland.com
Last weekend, red tags popped up on dozens of trees around West Oakland BART alerting neighbors about a permit for tree removal. These tree removals are part of the Mandela Station project, a major development that will transform the blocks around BART.
West Oakland needs our trees. Weâre working with neighbors and City officials to see whether any of them can be preserved. We also want to see a public maintenance plan from developers to make sure new trees survive and thrive.
Weâll have more action steps soon. Stay tuned!
