This International Women’s Day, I’m holding a little piece of my story in my hands. 💖 Honoured to be the inspiration behind this limited-edition #InternationalWomensDay @barbie Happy Pop created by my friend @leilakeshavjee , CEO of @eathappypops , and it carries a phrase that has been my mantra: Focus on the good. What many people don’t know is that I knew what I wanted to do with my life at the age of 9. Canada was in the middle of a constitutional crisis. French-English tensions were rising. While most kids were doing kid things, I was glued to the news, bringing newspaper articles to school for show-and-tell. I didn’t know why we were all talking about cabbage patch dolls when we could lose Quebec! My grade 4 teacher, Mrs. Hanson, once told me she thought I’d be the Prime Minister of Canada. I asked her if the Prime Minister could also tell people the news and why they should care about it. That same year, I also decided it was my civic duty to tell my classmates the truth about Santa Claus… which was not, admittedly, my finest moment. 😬 But the calling was real. I got my first job in news at 17 at a community TV station, and over the next 25 years, that little girl’s dream carried me all the way to anchoring one of Canada’s national network newscasts. I’m no longer a reporter, but I’m deeply proud of that chapter and I’m just as proud of this next one. Every lesson, every heartbreak, every hard-earned truth from those 25 years came with me. So on this International Women’s Day, I’m celebrating the power of knowing who you are, trusting your voice, and having the courage to begin again. Focus on the good. We love bringing a little something when we go to our friends’ birthday parties, and we always respect when the invite says no gifts please. Since we were going to their house today, we brought them so they could pop them straight into the freezer.
