How to spot greenwashing šŸ›‘ ā€œGreenwashingā€ is the practice of marketing a product or a brand as being greener or more environmentally friendly than it is. šŸ‘Ž As people are increasingly aware of their impact on the planet, many companies have seen this as a business potential. Learn how to identify greenwashing and how to avoid it… 1ļøāƒ£ Be cautious of products making generic claims like ā€œ100% naturalā€ or ā€œenvironmentally friendlyā€ without information as to how or why. 2ļøāƒ£ Avoid products that make irrelevant claims, like ā€œCFC-freeā€ 3ļøāƒ£ Look for a seal or certification mark from a recognised, independent third party specialising in green claims. 4ļøāƒ£ Look at the colour of the packaging. Green doesn’t always mean good for the planet. 5ļøāƒ£ Don’t be misled by pretty pictures or use of earth-friendly colors on product labels. 6ļøāƒ£ Question percentage claims, such as ā€œthis product contains 50% more recycled content.ā€ Fifty percent more than what? How often do you open your windows in winter? Even in big cities, outside air is often cleaner 😮 According to the World Health Organisation, 3.8 million deaths are attributed to household air pollution annually. This household air pollution comes from a variety of gases, chemicals and other substances. One of the most dangerous types of pollution is smoke, but other indoor air pollutants include mould, building materials, home products, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and naturally occurring gases like radon. What can we do? Opening your windows is a very simple but effective way of reducing the indoor pollution. Believe it or not, even in big cities, outside air is often cleaner than indoor one. You can also avoid chemicals at home by using natural cleaning products for example. No one can kill these plants! šŸ’Ŗ If you know someone who might need this list, tag them in the comments. These plants thrive on neglect, so don't worry if you don't have a green thumb šŸ‘ Spider plant: they thrive in bright indirect light, such as near a kitchen or bathroom window. They don’t need watered often but do give them a good drink when the soil begins to dry out. As long as you don’t let them get too soggy, your spider plant will thrive. Madagascar Dragon Tree: they can tolerate a wide range of temperatures. They grow best in bright indirect light, but will tolerate lower levels of light as well , they might just lose some of their color. Chinese evergreen: they like bright light but do equally well in low lights and even artificial light. You can keep the soil evenly moist, or let it dry out for a week or two before you water it again. Flaming Katy: this plant only needs to be watered when the soil dries out – it may go as long as two weeks without being watered. Rubber plant: they do need lots of indirect light to grow. You should keep the soil a little damp but definitely not soggy. Bromeliads: they can tolerate wide ranges in temperature, so you don’t need to be too fussy about the temps when you keep one in your home. Jade plant: It’s ok to underwater your jade plant. You’ll know it is overdue for a drink when its leaves begin to shrink. Then give it a long, slow drink of water, allowing the water to completely drain out of the soil. In your opinion, why is it "OK" to litter cigarette butts? šŸ¤” People generally don’t throw their trash on the floor, so why is it still so common to see people litter cigarette butts? People do it so automatically, and it just feels normal to everyone. Would we feel the same if people threw away a plastic bottle, a plastic bag or an empty can? Smokers around the world buy roughly 18 billion every day. While most of a cigarette’s innards and paper wrapping disintegrate when smoked, not everything gets burned. Trillions of cigarette filters are left over, only an estimated third of which make it into the trash. The rest are casually flung into the street or out a window. Cigarette filters are made of a plastic called cellulose acetate. When tossed into the environment, they dump not only that plastic, but also the nicotine, heavy metals, and many other chemicals they’ve absorbed into the surrounding environment. Let us know your opinion in the comments šŸ‘‡ why it is still socially accepted to litter cigarette butts? Surely, if we eat more honey, we will help the bees? Well…no 😮 Ā  There are more than 20,000 bee species in the world, and western honeybees are only one of them. Ā  Honeybees can harm local wild bee populations because they compete for nectar and pollen. Ā  And the problem is that honeybees are often less effective at pollinating than local wild bees. Ā  Why bees are essential to life on Earth? And what can we do to save them? Ā  Big parts of our ecosystem and biodiversity depend on bees. The bees need the flowers for food, and the flowers need the bees to reproduce. Ā  Bees are the most important pollinators. They help plants to grow, breed and produce food by transferring pollen. Ā  Most fruits, vegetables, nuts and plants like sunflowers, cocoa beans, coffee and tea, as well as cotton need bees to increase their yield and quality. Ā  Bees are also key to maintain biodiversity by pollinating plants that grow seeds, fruits and berries that will be eaten by other animals, and maintain the food chain. Ā  Unfortunately, bees population is a strong decline, and this puts at risk the balance in our ecosystem, and could trigger food shortages. Ā  ā“ What can we do to help the beesā“ Ā  1ļøāƒ£ Don’t use chemicals and pesticides to treat your garden. 2ļøāƒ£ Keep a small basin of fresh water outside your home because the bees are thirsty. 3ļøāƒ£ Choose flowers over grass in your garden. 4ļøāƒ£ Buy local, organic food. Organic food fields contain less pesticides and toxic chemicals. 5ļøāƒ£ Remember: bees are not here to sting you! Just let them do their job For more ideas on how to be more eco-friendly, visit our profile and find hundreds of @easyecotips 🌿 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #easyecotips #recycled #tips #ecofriendly #ecotips #greentips #zerowaste #zerowasteliving #zerowastelifestyle #zerowastelife #climatechange #globalwarming #reuse #reducereuserecycle #zerowastetips #savetheearth #ecofriendlyproducts #ecofriendlyliving #noplanetb #plasticfree #sustainablelifestyle #sustainable #sustainableliving #savethebees #bee #beesšŸ #beesofinstagram #beefriendly #vegan #didyouknow

Behind the scenes of Black Friday...šŸ˜” A UK investigation from ITV revealed that Amazon is destroying millions of items of unsold stock every year. Most of these products are new and unused. They are unsold products or returned. The investigation revealed that about 130,000 items were destroyed every week at a single fulfilment centre in Scotland Dunfermline warehouse. Products destroyed included smart TVs, laptops, drones, hairdryers, top of the range headphones, computer drives, books galore, thousands of sealed face masks. This is due to Amazon’s business model. Many vendors house their products in Amazon’s warehouses. But the longer the goods remain unsold, the more a vendor is charged to store them. It is eventually cheaper to dispose of the goods than to continue storing the stock. What can we do? Avoid Amazon when possible, and choose smaller, responsible businesses. Do not buy more than you need, thinking ā€œIf it doesn't' fit or I don’t like I can just return itā€. Returns often get destroyed. Do you know why bamboo is the coolest grass?šŸ˜Ž Bamboo can be very sustainable if grown in the right conditions. It is fast growing and is very low maintenance as it doesn’t need fertilizers or large amounts of water. It doesn’t need to be replanted as it self-generates from it’s own roots. Also, it produces 35% more oxygen than other hardwood trees. Bamboo is ideal when used in it’s raw original form, for furniture, or objects like toothbrushes or cutlery. It is an eco-friendly alternative to other types of hardwood trees like Oak (which grows much slower). However, be aware than many bamboo fabrics on the market are a form of rayon where the manufacturing process is highly intensive and involves many harmful chemicals. Although the production of bamboo is more sustainable than cotton, the manufacturing process of bamboo fabrics uses highly toxic chemicals, and is not considered a sustainable solution. In conclusion, choose bamboo products when they are made of raw bamboo, like furniture, toothbrushes, cutlery, and other objects. It is a sustainable alternative to most woods! It works. Traditional deodorants often contain a cocktail of chemicals, including parabens, aluminum compounds, and synthetic fragrances. These substances are absorbed by your skin and can disrupt your hormonal balance, potentially leading to health concerns such as breast cancer, skin irritation, and even neurological issues. Also, the little plastic sticks or bottles generate a lot of plastic waste! So the solution seems simple: make your own deodorant. Unfortunately, most recipes don't work! It's difficult to find a DIY recipe that actually works FOR YOU. We tried so many of them, tweaked the dosage, the ingredients, until we found one that worked for us, and that was not irritating for our skin. Feel free to try it! It's natural and plastic-free, will make you save a lot of money, and hopefully will work on you too! Directions: 1ļøāƒ£ Melt your coconut oil (if necessary) and mix with the corn starch and baking soda. 2ļøāƒ£ Add the essential oil. Mix. 3ļøāƒ£ Transfer to a glass container. 4ļøāƒ£ Use up! For those of you who want a natural deodorant but don't feel like making it yourselves, we have a selection of 8 sustainable deodorant brands on our website easyecotips.com. Costa Rica had the worst deforestation rate in America in the 1980's... In the 1940s, 75% of the country was covered in rainforest, cloud forest, and mangrove. Over the next 40 years, more than half of all trees were logged; the country had the highest deforestation rate in America in the ’80s. But since the 1990s, a forest conservation and restoration program was initiated based on the strategy of valuing forests by paying for their services, known as Payment for Environmental Services (PES). What is PES? PES establishes the forest as a utility company with parties who use the resources and services of the forest, mostly companies, paying for what and how they use it. Over the past two decades, the program has become the most successful forest management model on earth. Most of the lost forests have been replanted and regrown, and remaining forests have been conserved. Now, Costa Rica is a global biodiversity hotspot, where an estimated 5-6 percent of all known species can be found, remarkably on only 0.03 percent of the earth’s surface.
