The window breaks the light: four-quarters, twice-halved sun — I don’t remember what the fight was about. I’m on the train back from Milwaukee. I wanted to pray in Joan of Arc’s Chapel, kneel before Someone I knew was real. That was before I heard the attendant in her office, on the phone with her mother’s doctor. She said, “I know she doesn’t have much time left.” No one else was there. Just us. Two women living by sight and not by faith split like a raw-edged seam cut in two against the grain.
i can’t do what they do so i’ll do nothing at all

Mary said I don’t have to be good and I’m so good at that. I watered the basil and mint until they wilted yellow; I loved them too much. This is what my selfishness always does. I take the flag before surrender. No one leaves me at their own will.
The fish laid belly up in the river and the corn grew like hay. That’s why I had to leave; head West where a woman can be new again. You tried to talk us back together but your tongue was a hollowed out wasp nest. No bite left.
