I work down the block from one of the most historic bars in NYC, the Ear Inn! There’s been a tavern here since at least 1817, back when the Hudson River practically lapped at this townhouse’s doorstep. It’s been called the @earinnbar since the late 1970s, the already vintage sign that said BAR modified by blacking out part of the B to make an E. (New owners wanted a name for the nameless tavern, and one of them published a music magazine called Ear Magazine from the same building. Kismet.) Tonight, on this snowy day that found me covering the storm at the office, I stopped by to snap this video. Tonight it’s the “R” INN, with the neon on the fritz. That seems appropriate for this Retrologist. This cozy bar has welcomed countless thirsty souls during over two centuries of winter storms, but I would not be one of them tonight. On this very wet night in New York, I’d be staying dry, and back to work I went! #retrologist

#GregCohen @losangelesminerals is one of the greatest bass players alive today, but since he left NYC it has become a rare sight to be able to see him play live… so when he’s in town I go and you should too!!! Tonight he graced the stage of the oldest bar in NYC, the #EarInn @earinnbar , which has been in business for over 200+ years, since 1817, and hosts Sunday night jams like this one every week. Greg used to play here often when he lived in NY, so this was almost a homecoming gig and he joined #JonErikKellso @jonkellso and the #EarRegulars @theearregulars The EarRegulars feature leader Jon-Erik Kellso on trumpet and #MattMunisteri @mattmunisteri on guitar, #ScottRobinson on sax and other brass and reeds. A masterclass in music!!

Property: Ear Inn, one of New York City’s oldest continuously operating bars Address: 326 Spring Street, New York, NY 10013 Amenities: Full bar, American tavern menu, Sunday jazz nights, and a historic waterfront setting Welcome to the Ear Inn: a historical landmark tucked inside the James Brown House, a Federal-style building dating back to around 1817 that was built for George Washington’s aide James Brown (depicted in the famous painting of the Delaware River crossing). Once a private residence and later a saloon serving sailors along the Hudson River, it remains one of the city’s few surviving early taverns. 🌟 Key Features: ✨ A Historic Setting Located in the James Brown House, a designated city landmark, the Ear Inn preserves its early 19th century character and remains an active piece of New York’s maritime history. Inside, the compact rooms retain their original proportions and quirks, including creaking floors, exposed beams, and walls adorned with maritime relics and old advertisements. A narrow bar runs the length of the main room, lit by warm lamps and soft window light that filters through large glass panes. Each unique detail, from the worn wood to the collection of brass fittings and vintage mirrors, captures the steady passage of time. ✨ Cozy Fare Ear Inn’s straightforward menu emphasizes popular tavern dishes and good pours served without embellishment. It features delicious pub fare prepared in-house, including a classic eight-ounce burger, lamb burger with tzatziki, grilled chicken sandwich, and seasonal salads. Guests can choose from a rotating list of local and imported beers on tap, alongside a concise selection of cocktails & wines. ✨ A Community Atmosphere An integral component of Ear Inn’s charm? Its easygoing vibe, which makes it an ideal meeting spot for locals and artists drawn by its authenticity and quiet endurance in a changing neighborhood. Moreover, Sunday evenings include live jazz in the back room, where longtime regulars and visitors gather for a casual neighborhood performance led by rotating house musicians. 📱 Hours & Updates Follow @earinnbar for more info. #mealestate #landmark #explorepage
