Engineering Heritage.
Thank you to Max Underhill for hosting an excellent Engineering Heritage walk through Darling Harbour and environs on behalf of Engineering Heritage Sydney, Engineering heritage Australia and the Engineers Australia Sydney Division as part of this years Australian Heritage Festival. The first of 3 walks, alas, now all fully subscribed.
The mystery of the underhung ramp, the changes to the Darling Harbour overpass, the green ban protests that led to the Heritage Act, the saving of the Pyrmont bridge from demolition, construction of the overpass through an active rail yard, the beautiful wharf buildings inside the Hyatt Hotel, and a visit to the Pump House for an understanding of the clever engineered water powered Hydraulic Power system that powered the cranes, industrial development and lifting systems for medium rise buildings around what is now Darling Harbour. It's all there if you knew where to look... and now I do.
Food for thought.......thought for food.

"...it will be gratifying to Your Excellency to find that although the population has been diminished in so remarkable a manner by famine, disease, and emigration... the results of the Irish Census are, on the whole, satisfactory."
Closing comments by the 1851 Census Commissioner
In the month that the first census of 1926 of the newly formed Irish free state was released- it's interesting to reflect on the commentary on the 1851 census, a feed years after the Great Hunger and decimation of population.
Many hours required to follow through the excellent Biennale of Sydney at White Bay Power station. This Engineering Heritage building serves as a great host for the exhibition.
PS -Engineering Heritage walks through White Bay Power Station hosted by engineers from Engineering Heritage Sydney and Electric Energy Society of Australia coming later in 2026.
