Outside the oncology unit of Highland Hospital they spray carcinogenic herbicides to kill the non-grass plants. They may also kill the trees by piling the mulch too close around the trunks

I am disappointed to see pesticide signs outside a house on Meigs St. Looking at their sad lawn, you can see that whatever was sprayed killed everything but the grass. Just yesterday, I visited Ganondagan and took a photo of their lawn, which grows lush and green with a diversity of native plants. Maybe the folks at 959 can take a trip to Ganondagan to learn how to maintain their yard without applying poisons that risk causing cancer for the neighborhood cats and dogs who can't read the warning sign. Looks like 999 is planning to spray too. It is not too late to stop!

We went to the wonderful annual art competition at Ganondagan. The unifying theme was peace - the peace treaties with Europeans (disrespected by us), Peace among the critters of the earth, inner peace. So we stopped by Mud Creek Farm, less than 2 miles away, and found Farmer Ruth watering in the greenhouse. Sign up for her CSA if you want to eat those veggie starts when they're ripe!

More directly on topic is this striking image weighted with quotes from the Russian poet Osip Mandelshtam:

There is a powerful exhibit at The Yards - "The Thaw!" My choice for best of show for beauty and message are the two images by Erica Bryant. She stands on the broad shoulders of Romare Beardon.

I have very sad news to share - Alison Clarke's daughter Leslie let me know that Alison died today. But 92 years - that's a good long run! I love these photos of All when she was bursting with energy for all the projects she wanted to set in motion to end hunger, to inspire people young and old to grow healthy food, to train youngsters for paying jobs landscaping, to connect conscious eaters with local organic farms, to transform city, state and federal food policy, to create a joyous community around healthy food! I am so grateful to have known Al and to be counted among her many loving friends.
