FLARE will be presented next week, April 2nd 5:30 PM at @mit ‘s Spatial Sound Lab (Room W20 -429) As part of a residency developed at the Spatial Sound Lab for a 7.1 sound system, the project proposes the composition of a spatial sound piece delving around ideas such as solar flares, interference, electromagnetism, swing, resonance and celestial bodies. Much love to @tartarugagua for helping out with the project and to @ian.condry for hosting and introducing us to an amazing, growing commmunity (in and outside of the Spatial Sound Lab) for the past weeks. I would also like to thank @mit_cmsw for contributing to the project, and to @ecstatic.magic @whiskeysaurus @krisp.ai @victormarreiro to name a few of this big Boston/Cambridge experimental scene. We feel honored for having the chance to visit this country, seeing the cultural richness it contains and meeting its beautiful people from all corners of the world. Hopefully, against all odds, it will stay this way. This project was made with the support of Shuttle by Ágora - Cultura e Desporto do Porto, E.M., Portugal, #sound #art #space #flare #performance #mit #sun #shuttle #plákaporto #porto

Very happy to announce that I’ll have the privilege to do an artist residency at MIT - Massachusetts Institute of Technology, during the whole month of March 2025. I’ll be working at MIT’s Spatial Sound Lab for the development of FLARES, a sound piece that will delve into ideas such as electro-magnetism, interferences, resonant bodies, solar flares and other celestial movements. 💫💫💫 This residency is happening with the support of SHUTTLE da Ágora - Cultura e Desporto do Porto, E.M., an artist internationalisation program promoted by @plakaporto and @cmporto . Shoutout to @ian.condry for making this come true, as well as @san_rocha and @tartarugagua for the support, and also to PLAKA and the juries of this year’s Shuttle edition @nycjoanka , @mary_agnessss and @malaranjeira 🙏 Photo taken by @lightravel during a performance at @deliceiras_18 under the invitation of @gretaona_ Wishing a great 2025 to everyone. That this new year may bring a bit of light into this haunting times that we live in. 🤍 #sound #space #body #movement #art #sky #ear #music #mind #life #art #performance #plaka #mit

SATURDAY 9 MAY: POLIFEME + XAVIER PAES & INÊS TARTARUGA + ENRIQUE DEL CASTILLO Real No Real x Hegoa present a exceptionally strong triple bill, drawing together three practices that each work across sound, image and the unstable material life of technology. Polifeme, the project of Spanish artist María Cervelló Llorca, works at the intersection of sound art, experimental performance and media archaeology, translating electromagnetic, electrical and luminous phenomena from obsolete devices into immersive sound. In her work, machines cease to be neutral tools and become active sonic agents, while cathode-ray images are treated not as representations but as resonant objects with their own audible force. Xavier Paes and Inês Tartaruga are Portuguese visual artists whose work emerges at the crossroads of performance, sound, and visual media. For over a decade, they have maintained an ongoing collaboration, delving into ecological processes and their embodied resonances. Committed to radical renewal, curious about sonic landscapes, and aligned with DIY ethics, they engage in collective and participatory approaches within public spaces, guided by improvisation, activism, and multi-instrumental experimentation. Enrique del Castillo is a Spanish sound artist bridging expanded cinema and experimental music. His work centers on the transformation of light into sound through self-built instruments and optical systems. Using repurposed parts from vintage projectors, he creates his own optical readers, so-called Umbráfonos, that translate patterns on 35mm film into sound. Blending mechanical processes, these hybrid machines - part instrument, part automaton - generate immersive soundscapes for performances and installations. There is a shared curiosity running through all three acts: how image becomes vibration, how signal becomes texture, and how performance can reframe the material systems we usually overlook. Hegoa focuses on contemporary and cross-generational experimental music from the Basque region. 🎟 £17 door / £15 advance / £10 members → Tickets via link in stories and cafeoto.co.uk → Doors 7:30pm

I love Echo / Echo is like a time travel / Travel of memory / Memory of Love. In Metamorphoses (8 AD), the poet Ovid tells of Juno and the jealousy she felt over her husband Jupiter’s affairs. Though vigilant, whenever she was about to catch him, Echo distracted her with lengthy conversations. When at last Juno realized the truth, she cursed Echo. From that moment on, the once loquacious nymph could only repeat the last spoken words of another person. Sometime after being cursed, Echo spied a young man, Narcissus, while he was out hunting deer with his companions. She immediately fell in love with him. The more she looked at the young man, the more she longed for him. Though she wished with all her heart to call out to Narcissus, Juno’s curse prevented her. During the hunt, Narcissus became separated from his companions and called out, “is anyone there” and heard the nymph repeat his words. Startled, Narcissus answered the voice, ‘come here,’ only to be told the same. When Narcissus saw that nobody had emerged from the glade, he concluded that the owner of the voice must be running away from him. Finally, he shouted, “This way, we must come together.” Taking this to be a reciprocation of her love, Echo concurred ecstatically, “We must come together!” In her delight, Echo rushed to Narcissus ready to throw her arms around her beloved. Narcissus, however, was appalled and, spurning her, exclaimed, ‘Hands off! May I die before you enjoy my body.’ All Echo could say in reply was, ‘enjoy my body’ and having done so she fled, scorned, humiliated, and shamed. Despite the harshness of his rejection, Echo’s love for Narcissus only grew. When Narcissus died, wasting away before his own reflection, consumed by a love that could not be, Echo mourned over his body. When Narcissus, looking one last time into the pool uttered, “Oh marvellous boy, I loved you in vain, farewell”, Echo too chorused, “Farewell”. Eventually, Echo, too, began to waste away. Her beauty faded, her skin shrivelled, and her bones turned to stone. Today, all that remains of Echo is the sound of her voice. (Retreived from wikipedia) #sound #music #space
