After about 140 meals and five months spent in every sort of dining room, my first guide to the best new restaurants in the D.C. area is live! I view this list as a reflection of the persistence and optimism driving our food scene forward, and of my own experience as @washingtonpost food critic, getting to know my new home city. To help you make a game plan, I’ve ranked these 10 restaurants, all of which opened in the past 12 months. These are my top 3. For a gift link to the full list, hit the link in my bio. The first time I went to Takoma Park, I thought, with total delight… wait, this is Berkeley. In my review of @motorkattakoma , I write about a very special cat, a warm and earnest neighborhood restaurant, and my own hippie upbringing on the opposite side of the country.
Izakaya Seki is the first restaurant that food critic @e_zar has awarded The Washington Post’s highest rating: four stars.
For nearly 14 years, father-daughter duo Hiroshi and Cizuka Seki have operated the compact two-story Japanese restaurant in D.C.’s U Street Corridor with understated precision and unwavering commitment.

Since becoming food critic at The Post in November, some cocktail napkin math suggests I have spent about 140 nights in restaurants, give or take a few home-cooked meals I never did locate, @e_zar writes. As my first guide to the best new restaurants in the D.C. area published this week, I’ve taken to reflection.
Despite a few small gripes and the extra-large bottle of Tums that now sits on my nightstand like a family portrait, I’m loving restaurants more than ever. After all this time happily spent in other people’s dining rooms, here are takeaways from Washington’s most overstuffed diner. It’s a badge I wear with pride.

I’m so very happy to give my first 🌟🌟🌟🌟 to a restaurant I feel more strongly towards with each visit. I hope you’ll read my full review of @sekidc and admire @scottsuchman photos at the link in my bio. And go! Sit at the counter and order widely and love your life.
