I don’t know what it is but some people’s faces feel especially dear to me, even when we are complete strangers. I look at them and can’t stop looking. It’s like seeing a loved one after a long time apart—the face was always there in my memory but seeing it again feels different, like rediscovering something I already knew by heart. And I keep looking at it over and over as if it were water and I were thirsty to death.
How can a stranger feel so familiar? I’ll never know and I don’t want to. I can imagine that maybe we were lovers on Olympus destroying each other with all the passion and anger in our hearts, ruining entire family trees and eventually betraying each other with Zeus or Venus so my soul remembered yours forever. Or maybe I was your mother and you were my newborn baby and we were enjoying a beautiful day in Pompeii in our freshly built house. Maybe we loved each other to death but our families never let us marry so we followed their wishes and ended up living long unhappy rich lives. Maybe we planned a coup d’état together and overthrew a queen. Or maybe I was that queen and you were the executioner whose face became the last thing I saw in my previous life. Maybe you were my beloved enemy and I dedicated my whole life to chasing you. Or maybe we are simply made of the same stardust and my molecules remember what it felt like to once be whole.
I observe your face carefully. My gaze is magnetized by your features. I am a geographer arriving in an unknown landscape for the first time, mapping mountain heights and the curves of hills into a field notebook. I recognized you but I do not know you. Does it mean I can truly see you?
