Over the years I have had some good times at this festival and it really does offer one of the most unique, fun and wild experiences on the SA festival circuit. Where some plug and play, Bazique and their collaborators certainly don’t- keen to see what has been put together 💥 ☀️ is out all weekend!

I sometimes forget it’s been two decades since my first official club gig at The Lounge on Long Street back in 2005. I got the gig by handing them an actual mix CD one afternoon, and for a few months after that I featured on fridays playing to 0-30 or so people at times… it was by no means glamorous, but it was (and music still is) a safe place where I was able to use music as a means to communicate. Back then, Cape Town’s nightlife scene had this raw electricity, the kind that didn’t need big productions, decor, mega lineups or social media to feel alive. I started out playing hip hop, which drifted into drum & bass, and by 2010, the moment I heard a rolling bassline, everything had changed. I’d found the music that would resonate with me for the next 15+ years. These pictures are from Fictions infamous “It Came from the Jungle” night. I played on vinyl back then, cueing records under dim lights while the room morphed around low lying cigarette smoke. There were no phones on the dance floor, just people locked in to the vibes. It was tight-knit, unpretentious, and completely about the music…. Also nerve racking as hell when the crowd are 5cm from the decks lol. It was a time when you went out to lose yourself, not record yourself, and that freedom, that collective energy, is something I still chase today!
