I have been enjoying doing quick watercolor color studies lately. No pencils allowed, and no more than 20 minutes spent on an image. Here's one from today.

“The Art of Hold Shaping”
Two weeks out from premiering our new film at the Somewhere Film Festival hosted at Ascent New Haven! May 15, 7-10pm.
somewhere studios presents an intimate documentary exploring the world of Dan Yagmin as the creative force behind Decoy Holds. Moving between wild landscapes, workshop process, and climbing walls, the film follows how raw inspiration becomes sculpted form. It’s a portrait of an artist shaping not just holds, but the way we experience climbing itself.
We’re super stoked for this and hope to see you there!!
P.s. it’s free event
This old building that used to be a beer and wine store was perched high up in a super hilly neighborhood where I was staying one year in Pittsburgh. It reminded me a lot of the janky old package store that my father owned in Hartford, CT when I was growing up. This one felt like it was going to fall over and the side walk in front was heaved up in a way that fit the nature of the areas exaggerated hilly and somewhat busted up terrain. Watercolor in Baohong sketchbook.

#pleinapril 4-27-26 I was intrigued by the way the mid day sun poked through the newly green trees and cast a spot light on this old tree that I found near a creek in Colebrook 🌳

Stand by Me - 6”x 10” - Watercolor on Sanford 🌳 Often times I create images to uplift others, tell stories, and to simply escape into my own world. I don’t often get too political as I use my art as a place of peace and don’t want my mind overwhelmed by the darkness of our current political landscape. That being said, since the US and Israel have chosen to engage in an illegal war of choice against Iran that has killed hundreds of innocent children, and while innocent people in Gaza and Lebanon are slaughtered, it is hard to stay quiet. This painting for me is about mourning the young lives lost to these senseless wars, and about sticking together during these difficult times.

I wasn’t able to get out and paint last week for #pleinapril 🌳 In the meantime I have been doing some small watercolor sketchbook entries. This is one based on a photo of a father and daughter that I took at a bus stop in Cambodia. In these sketches I am trying to eliminate as much detail as possible while keeping the focus on shapes and color. This one is about 3”x5” painted in about 45 mins in a Baohong sketchbook. Oftentimes less is more 🫡

#pleinapril 4/14/26 🪨 There is a small brook close to my house that I’ve enjoyed painting at over the last several days. The brook sits in a heavily forested, narrow valley, that makes for lovey dappled light. The rocks are thick with earthy green moss that glow and sparkle from the light being reflected off of the bottom of the brook onto them. Attempting to simplify the many complex patterns, shapes, and textures has been challenging, but I particularly enjoyed the abstract qualities of this one.
