Yes, that really happened. Alex Apicella on Saturday blasted 3 home runs, 9 RBI, including a grand slam in the eighth inning to lead one of the wildest baseball games many will ever see. RCSJ-Gloucester clawed back from down 17-1 and defeated Brookdale 25-18 to win the NJCAA Region 19 Championship at Rutgers-Camden. The win secured the Roadrunners a bid to the National Championship Tournament in Johnson City, TN, as RCSJ searches for what could be their fourth straight national championship.
Nick Izzo had every run batted in for RCSJ in the Roadrunner’s 4-3 nailbiter over Middlesex to advance to the Region 19 championship round. In a game full of tension and great moments, Izzo delivered the game-winning hit with an RBI double in the seventh. Izzo is fifth in the NJCAA national rankings in RBI, and he added on a few more Friday.
Ray Mulhern leads the nation in his for the NJCAA, and he added on a few more in Brookdale’s 6-4 win over Middlesex to clinch a spot in the championship round. Mulhern recorded two walks and the go-ahead RBI single in the 8th inning. Brookdale enters the championship round 2-0 and only has to win once to clinch their second straight Region 19 title on Saturday.
