AS ABOVE SO BELOW
Follow us down the rabbit hole.
🌀
This body of work is a celebration of Spring:
an exploration and explosion of new color palettes, looking at nature through the looking glass, its sweet and spicy, its light and dark, As Above So Below.
🩷
This work started simply as a need to create, a combined labor of love amongst artists doing their craft, feeling the much needed oxygen in our lungs, pushing the blood into our wings.
To be honest, I’ve never wrestled more with a story, largely because I was intentionally stretching myself and my comfort in working with so much color.
The story took many twists and turns in the making, but ultimately this was the story that was meant to be told.

DANCE!!!
excited to return to the dance floor and be working with @herrimandancecompany tomorrow morning.
we’ll be shooting individual action shots of the dancers, portraits and groups, and mixed with a bunch of personality, candid and creative expressions.
I’m surprised I haven’t worked more with dancers and dance groups. I’ve always loved working with the talented and hard working dancers - so this is a call out: if you’re a dancer and/or company or group, let’s connect and create amazing art and meaningful work together.
HUGE THANKS to @savydevoge for aligning this up and making this come together.

Musca Depicta 🪰
“painted fly” (in Latin; plural: muscae depictae) is a depiction of a fly as a conspicuous element of various paintings. The feature was widespread in 15th- & 16th-century European paintings, and its presence has been subject to various interpretations by art historians. (wiki)
One key aspect of painted flies is it’s symbolism: often signify vanitas (transience of life), decay, or moral decay, frequently found near rotting fruit, skulls, or, in portraits, suggesting imperfection or corruption. (Google AI Overview)
I had learned this concept of the painted fly way back in modern art history days at Salt Lake City Community College. I thought this was fascinating. It was another great example that art can communicate through symbols, through a completely different language, a powerful and different tongue, that speaks nonverbally. And clearly I put this powerful tool in my pocket.
the context to this fly was a turning point in wonderland.
My assistant @godmarcuss and I were studying out the vibrant rich yolk and messy nature on display. Then @greenlightdistrictintimates joined us as I was wrapping the shooting. And somewhere in the mix of this space, a fly landed greedily on a shell. Kisi went to shew it away. But I was excited for the fly. I was reminded of this on-the-nose sign of symbols and nods to the master works, the symbolism became poetry in motion, the art of Musca Depicta en vivo!
The fly pushed me to go further, think different, pivot, and be open. It helped me break through an obstacle and see Wonderland through my own looking glass. I then explored nature and saw it like never before. The micro becoming the macro. I was Alice In Wonderland.

throwback Thursday: some poignant hits from the archives. • in 2011ish, I made a dramatic shift from shooting methodically 100% film and full time destination weddings, to the speed of shooting digitally and jumping into the cockpit of an exciting rocket ship of stock photography production. I had buttons, switches, and props and freedom to play and experiment in a creative new space. with the very little direction I was given, one key element spoke to me, I was encouraged to make imagery that spoke concepts; it’s concepts that sell, because in stock photography, “concept is king”.
I find it interesting that I created these images over a decade ago. Though the images at the time were unpopular and didn’t sell very well, (and knowing what I know now if I really wanted to sell stock I’d shoot concepts very differently), but I have to ask myself, why was I wrestling with these concepts then? what was I trying to say? Why was I saying it? I’m concerned that if I were to create similar content today, that the visual concepts that made people uncomfortable yesterday, have now become dangerously desensitized today. This was before Sandy Hook, and before the recent bombings of 175+ dead Iranian school girls of today.
When is enough enough?
