In 1983, Harold Washington made history being elected the first Black Mayor of Chicago. It was the second largest city in America at the time and very racially segregated. His tenure in politics was challenged with opposition and resistance as the divided city struggled to unite on a path forward in a period known as “The Council Wars.”
Against Gravity: Flying Afrikans + Other Urban Legends connects the parallels of Chicago’s political landscape in the 80s & today, unpacking how it affected Black men’s perception of masculinity and the world around them.
