Thank you #ajaxcouncil for supporting this motion Whereas Durham Family and Cultural Centre (DFCC) is an Ajax-based charitable organization that provides a pace for members of the Black community, and other racialized and diverse groups to engage in culturally focused programs such as counselling, parenting, education, mentorship, and child and youth development; Whereas, the Town of Ajax is a highly diverse community, with approximately 65% of residents identifying as part of racialized or diverse groups, emphasizing the importance of culturally responsive services and support which are critical to the well-being and stability of Black and racialized families and serve as a source of meaningful employment within the local community; Whereas, according to a letter received by DFCC from the Ministry of Citizenship and Multiculturalism, while the Government of Ontario has reaffirmed its support for the Black Youth Action Plan through an allocation of $16.6 million in the 2026-27 provincial budget, the province would not commit to ongoing or equivalent funding for previously funded organizations; Whereas, the letter further stated that an update was expected to be provided to the affected agencies and organizations by early summer 2026; Whereas, DFCC has stated that without the funding guarantee, they will be forced to immediately lay off 80% of their staff and reassess the programs they offer, which support 50 families and over 500 community members across Durham each year; Whereas, organizations province-wide that support Black youth may be facing similar challenges as a result of funding uncertainty and such instability disproportionately impacts Black youth and their families. @durhamfcc_ @yourvoice4ajax

This is our call to action for our community to come together to help us stay afloat so that young Black and Brown children may continue to have a space to flourish. . . On March 27, 2026, the Ministry of Citizenship and Multiculturalism notified the Durham Family & Cultural Centre (DFCC) of a shift in the Black Youth Action Plan (BYAP) funding strategy. They advised the agency that while a $16.5 million provincial allocation for the BYAP program exists for 2026-27, the ministry has explicitly stated it cannot guarantee ongoing or equivalent funding levels for currently supported organizations. They also communicated that a decision will be made in the summer regarding this funding and that, in the meantime, they have no funding to assist agencies in continuing to provide services until that decision is made (June/July). . .
