Four women have experienced war in their homeland. Now they live in a northern country far from the chaos. But although their bodies have reached safety, their souls still live in the realm of terror. : Thank you @kalafestival and to everyone who came to our Postcards from Dhërmi: Creative Practice workshop 🌱 🌊🪩☀️ _______ “Who here has ever sent a postcard to someone? Who here has ever received a postcard? Who here has ever sent a postcard to themselves?” The room was silent - myself (Hannah) and Alexandra smiled to each other as we sat together in the circle. “No one? Well then, today is a great opportunity to try something new!”. Through a combination of guided check ins, visualisation, a creative warm up and dedicated creation time, 16 beautiful people reflected on their KALA festival experience and made a meaningful postcard from the heart to send to themselves. By coming into stillness people were able connect to their inner-voice, release any tension in the body and recentre themselves in a grounding space after a week of partying and sunbathing in Dhërmi, Albania. Together we invited in a childlike curiosity to aid the creative process, welcoming in more awe and wonder, and reminded ourselves to leave the perfectionist at the door which can often limit our expression. To close the space everyone posted their creations in our makeshift ‘postbox’ [a suitcase with a drawing stuck on the side!] so it was energetically complete. As a final goodbye we encouraged everyone to take a hand written intuitive message - one for themselves and one to gift to a loved one. We know first hand the power of recalling positive memories from the past and how this can uplift the soul, so we hope when the attendees receive their creation in the post in the future it makes them smile, and they can keep their postcard as a treasured memory. _______ We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming workshops and events. <3: DUOVIII Hannah & Alexandra 🌱 #kalafestival #creativeworkshop #duoviii

“At some point you have to decide for yourself who you want to be” — As we went to see the fire, @alexandramccc intuitively started filming. I decided to walk out towards the blue ocean, a colour that always reminds me of the beautiful visuals from the film Moonlight (2016) directed by Barry Jenkins. Since that day in Albania, the soundtrack of this film has been playing in times of creative solitude and today in a moment of inspiration this short video was born. Creative day at the studio: making a Alvar Aalto inspired gingerbread house As we finalised the final tweaks of the house, I wanted to capture some photos of us doing it. gingerbread house x Alvar Aalto This year The Aalto2 Museum Centre @aalto2museum has a competition to build a gingerbread house inspired by Alvar Aalto himself. The house can either be an existing building or you can build a new house influenced by their designs. We decided to build our own little house, inspired by the clean-cut geometrics, organic shapes and the well-designed interior and architecture associated with the Finnish architect and designer. For @duoviii Winter Creative Day, I invited Bakr @bakr__hasan (Theater Director, Artist & Actor, who is a part of our creative collective at duoviii) to join in on building a gingerbread house. It was Bakr’s first time working or making anything from gingerbread, so I was honoured to share this traditional winter activity with him. Planning and building the house was a great way for us both to practice our patience (I only wanted to throw away the house once lol). Along with training our problem-solving skills, feeding our imagination and working together as a team, it was a very fun experience. The intention for this project was for us to have fun in winter spirit and to learn through doing. It was a great way for me to show more about the creative process which included some planning, research, model making and working with gingerbread. I am very proud of us and our little house, we will definitely be making this into a tradition and inviting more people to join in next year. It was a great experience as a whole and I hope you enjoy the photos of our gingerbread house and its making.
