“I came into the library to use the Databank; it’s a great scheme which gifts data sims and vouchers so people can access the internet. I got talking to the volunteer on shift, who I knew from our course together. They had been volunteering for about 8 months and highly recommended it.
They let me know how to sign up as a volunteer and after my checks and induction training, I am now a Databank Volunteer myself. Help like this being available in the community, in a way which is easy to access is really important and I’m proud to be a part of it – I tell everyone I meet now about all the services and support available in their local library!”

“I came into the library to find out about IT courses. I had started college during lockdown, and it was all online. I didn’t find it easy and left the course early. The library matched me up with an IT volunteer and helped me to sign up for a basic IT course. He was a retired Community Learning Tutor and he was very patient and kind. I worked my way through the course. This worked much better for me than remote learning as I could ask questions and get help in real time. With my library card I was able to do the course for free and sign in both at the library and at home to work my way though the topics. Once I finished my course I wanted to stay on but wasn’t sure how to do this. We talked about volunteering and I thought this was a good way forward. I was buddied up with another volunteer until I felt ok doing it on my own. I enjoy helping out at the IT drop in and being part of the team.”

“I worked for the library service previously as a causal staff member, during my studies. Once I moved on to full time work elsewhere, I returned as a volunteer. It is a great way to keep in touch with the team and be involved in a way that works for me. I really enjoyed my time at the library, and I am happy I can still support activities and spend time there. It is a really rewarding role and makes the best use of my talents. People are always surprised to find out that the library offers free music tuition and has a musical instrument library where you can take them out on loan.”

“I recently retired and had been spending time in my local community centre, where the library is based. It’s a great wee hub and there are lots of activities and groups to keep me busy, including a book club.
I saw the poster about volunteering and asked the staff who showed me how to apply. It was quick and easy to complete the application, and I received training and support to welcome me into the role and organisation.
I am really happy to be a part of the team. I was here when this building first opened as a youngster, so it feels lovely to be supporting activities there in my community, now I have more time. My skills and experience are put to good use helping others. It feels good to be useful.”
