Had so much fun at Cake Picnic today, what a perfect day for inspiring sweet treats and great vibes ☀️ Dulu Deli Pandan Party Cake > Pandan ricotta sponge, pandan kaya, pandan buttercream and coconut rainbow jelly I don’t bake as often these days with a little bub on the move, so this event was a great excuse to experiment and try something new. Also lots of fun with piping some squiggly buttercream! Credits to @mali_bakes recipe book - the ricotta cake and buttercream was perfect for making ahead ✨ Here are snippets of the many inspiring cakes and great picnic vibes from today x @melbfoodandwine @cakepicnictour

Hello to many new faces and to familiar ones, 👋🏼thanks for following Dulu Deli’s journey! It’s been awhile since I’ve shared my story on Instagram - so just thought I’d reintroduce myself and the story behind our kaya x My name is Chooi Si (first name with a space in it 😉), I moved to Melbourne from Malaysia in year 2012 and have since called beautiful Naarm my home away from home. I started making kaya in the thick of 2020 lockdowns. It was challenging times, as I’m sure a lot of us felt. Missing Malaysia, combined with a career break and lots of quiet time - I decided to dive into making food from my childhood to reconnect with my roots. Kaya, a delicious coconut spread has been in my family’s history. My grandfather started a bakery in Taiping, Malaya - specialising in kaya puffs. To date, my cousin still runs Chok Kee bakery as a third generation baker! One day, my parents mentioned how much they missed the flavour of kaya my grandparents used to make - using duck eggs instead of chicken eggs. So began my quest to revive this flavour. Stirred over low heat for hours the traditional way, the depth of flavour in duck egg kaya is just unreal. Making kaya is truly a labour of love. I just knew deep inside that it is so important to keep this “old” flavour alive. Now being a mum, it means even more for the younger generation to be able to enjoy it! Dulu Deli has come quite a fair bit since then, taking the leap into a commercial kitchen. During weekdays, I design dream homes in my architecture job. During a weekend each month, I tend to my dream - hauling as many duck eggs as I can gather and spending a massive 12 hour day cooking kaya, for the love of keeping this flavour alive. We have a team to make this possible - assistance from friends in hospitality and my supportive husband taking care of bubba. The trust from stockists, collaborators and return customers have kept us going over the years 🤎 My heart is simply full at Dulu Deli, it brings me joy seeing kaya continuing to be enjoyed on toasts, ice cream and beyond ✨ Thank you for your ongoing support, we hope you enjoy the kaya goodness 🥰

DELICIOUS. ICE CREAM. Now scooping at @luthers_scoops - Dulu Deli kaya rippled in real pandan ice cream, mixed with coconut crumb and dessicated coconut ✨ We are so grateful for the support and trust given from the friendly team at Luther’s Scoop. To have our kaya featured in their seasonal special is just a dream come true! The Pandan Kaya ice cream special is a must try, along with their many other epic ice cream flavours! (One scoop is never enough!)

Back from maternity leave ✨👋🏼 As one step leads to another, Dulu Deli is moving our kaya production into a commercial kitchen! It just felt like the natural progression for our home based business, thanks to growing support of our loyal customers and stockists over the years. Being a mum truly shifts my priorities - freeing up the home kitchen for family life and for bubs to eventually crawl about and explore. At the same time, I also want to (sustainably) continue on the legacy of kaya making so that a piece of my Malaysian heritage lives on for bubs to cherish and to continue bringing kaya goodness on your toasts and desserts for years to come 🌴🍞🥥 After several years from humble beginnings in a one bedroom Fitzroy apartment and eventually our home in Reservoir, it feels like the right time to take this leap into a commercial kitchen. We are excited about the opportunities this brings for collaborating with other food businesses and stockists, by being in a space that can scale up production as opposed to more frequent production days at home! (Thankful for my husband who had to be patient over the years to finally have back a calmer home kitchen on weekends ha!) Our hearts are truly filled with gratitude for all your support 🤎💚 at Dulu Deli, our kaya is handmade with lots of love and care the traditional way for you to keep enjoying flavours from my grandparents time. Swipe for a walk down memory lane of humble beginnings in our home kitchen 🥰

Hello 2025! Dulu Deli kaya is back for pre-orders 🎉 We are grateful to our customers enabling our 4th year operating as a home based kaya business 🥰 To others who have yet to know our kaya, here is a little introduction to this coconut-curd-caramel-goodness! Each batch of our homemade kaya is stirred in low heat over 4 to 5 hours (!!!) for a beautiful depth in flavour. Cooking it over a long period means water is evaporated from the mixture - enabling kaya to be naturally self preserving for months without any added preservatives 😮 made the traditional way, grandparents in southeast asia knew what they were doing for sure! At Dulu Deli, we trust that good things take time and seek to honour traditional methods the best we can ✨ Our kaya is made in a licensed home kitchen using a base of only natural ingredients - free range duck eggs, sugar, coconut cream ✨ There are 2 flavours : - Hainanese kaya which has toasted caramel for a darker flavour - Nyonya pandan kaya with added freshly squeezed pandan essence We’d love for you to give our kaya a try on your next breakfast toast 😋 pre-orders can be made online and the kaya jars shipped australia wide to your doorstep. You can also opt to pickup from our doorstep in Reservoir 👌🏻 Want to know more about the Dulu Deli story and maybe make a pre-order? Jump on to our website, link in bio 👋🏼

What a milestone! 🎉 We have increased our capacity of kaya making and our licensed home kitchen is now bursting at the seams 🙈 It’s hard work but so worth it as our dear customers and stockists will now find it easier to get their hands on more kaya ✨ When first starting out Dulu deli more than 3 years ago, I made less than 30 jars a month. Slowly but surely, Dulu Deli have now multiplied that to now make a whopping 170 jars monthly! 🥹 Our process continues to prioritise quality and sustainability where possible - strictly using free range duck eggs, organic coconut cream and only natural ingredients. The cooking process isn’t rushed, allowing the kaya to slowly caramelise over hours until glossy and balanced ✨ We hope and trust that our customers and stockists can continue to enjoy Dulu Deli’s kaya at cafes and at home. One of the most rewarding aspects of running this little deli is hearing that both parents and kids enjoy slathering lots of the kaya on their toast! The big bonus - receiving the thumbs up from veteran grandmothers 😭💕 Thank you to everyone for supporting this dream, I’m so honoured to be able to share my love for continuing the kaya tradition with each and every one of you x
