The first ever West Yorkshire Hip-Hop zine!
With streamed music all-but murdering the vital physical sales market lots of local artists had come to rely on in order to just pay for their chosen art, we decided to move into more tangible media by collating information about the hip-hop scene in West Yorkshire into a zine for free distribution. This first issue includes biographies and QR code links to individual artists that featured on the WY hip-hop vol 1 vinyl as well as articles written by different members of the community about breakin’, grafitti, freestyle and trap/grime/bassline artists. If you are finding out about the scene and these artists for the first time, please go and support – physical sales are a lifeline for musicians already up against a cost of living crisis. Streaming a song once nets the artist you’re listening to about a third of a penny at best, it has to be treated as a try-before-you-buy or soon there won’t be independent artists breaking through, it’ll just be the guff billionaires have paid to make you hear.

The West Yorkshire Hip-Hop vol. 1 vinyl. This record was funded by the West Yorkshire Hip-Hop artists featured on it, without them this wouldn't exist. A collaborative project to try and crowdfund physical media between the community, we intend to do more than just this one, get in touch if you'd like to be on the next one. Vol 1 features WY artists: BurgZ, HashFinger, Kemetstry, TjTucker, Cipher Beats, The Dinkmaster, Chills Myth, DRMCTCHR, Cloudy Late, Cus D, ExP, DJ Agent M, MC Daddy Speedo, Andrew 300 (RIP), TEKS, Obi Joe, Naffdogg, Precinct Phantom, & DJ MusiCarl. It was curated by ExP, mastered by IRN MNKY & the artwork is by Marcus Jack.

Today is also the day we celebrate 20 years of DUBWHY and 28 years of Fresh Jive at the Howard Assembly Room in Leeds from 7pm.
The event features hip-hop pioneer
Grandmaster Caz headlining, a full AV history of hip-hop set by DJ Woody, and support from a lineup of West Yorkshire hip-hop all-stars that have co-funded and co-released "West Yorkshire Hip-Hop Vol 1".
