Amazed at how much I enjoyed F1 (The Movie). I have almost zero interest in motorsport, and the trailers for it piqued zero interest for me as it looked like bland corporate product. But in an imax cinema, it’s an awesome experience. The story is indeed utterly predictable and full of tropes, but under Joseph Kosinski’s direction, the between-races scenes are handled lightly and entertaining (with slight Ted Lasso vibes) and don’t get in the way of the frankly amazing race scenes. It really is TOP GUN with cars, but I think I enjoyed it even more than that film. Leave your brain at the door, and you’ll have a blast with it (if the screen and sound system is big enough!!)

I’m in the process of moving to a new office. Not a huge leap - just a few doors down the road, in fact. But in the process of clearing out more than 10 years of accumulated “stuff”, I’ve realised I need to clear house. So there’s bunch of old (but working) gear that I’m happy to give away to anyone who wants it. Including a 30” Apple Cinema Display (with an adapter to convert the ancient proprietary Apple Display connector to DVI). Lots of old cables, hard drives etc too. I’ll start making a proper list shortly. This is just to give you a heads up. And you’d need to collect it from my office in soho if you want it. More to follow. And here’s the new office (it’s a work-in-progress!)

Saw a special preview of Gareth Evan’s latest movie last night - HAVOC. It’s not a terribly deep movie, so this won’t be an exhaustive review. But it’s a solidly fun crime action flick, clearly done as a love letter to the great Hong Kong cop action movies of the 80s and 90s. The script ain’t the best, but it more than makes up for that with some intensely visceral, crunchy fight scenes. Evans really knows how to craft a good action set piece, and you can practically feel the infectious energy he has making these scenes of barely-contained chaos come to life on screen. There’s a fight in a nightclub which is easily the best I’ve seen since John Wick, with dizzying camerawork and hits you can really feel. Afterwards there was a Q&A with Gareth Evans, who was bloody lovely and very funny. The surprising revelation that came out it was - he really wants to make a musical! And I reckon he’d absolutely smash it too - bonus points if it’s an insanely violent musical 🤣
