Stills from A Soft Bed Waits

This is my final night at Sitka Center for Art and Ecology on the Oregon coast where I was in residency for the past 3 weeks to work on my moss focused film. Every shot is filmed through macro lenses while magnifying glasses invert the human-scaled world behind moss.
Thanks to the staff at Sitka and my wonderful cohort for such memorable time. And thanks to the mosses for offering such a phenomenal display.

Excepts from "Welcome to Low-Level Radiactive Waste Storage Site"
Within an office at the Lanyu radioactive waste storage facility, a promotional video plays for visitors to Taiwan's Orchid Island. The site houses 100,000 barrels of nuclear waste, placed there in the 1980s without the informed consent of the island's indigenous Tao community.
For this 12-minute video installation, I digitally modeled native moss species found on Lanyu and animated them over the storage site television footage, accompanied by field recordings captured on the island. The resulting work transforms institutional messaging into an evolving visual field where organic forms and ambient sound reclaim the narrative space, creating a meditative intersection between documentation and digital intervention.
DM for screening and exhibition inquiries.

THE PINE BARRENS
LIVE on @labocine June 12-14
@pinebarrensfilm@indierightsstudio
A wilderness, sculpted by fire, stands defiant of the encroaching megalopolis surrounding it. Once deemed inhospitable, the Pinelands became home to many. Through a veil of folklore and myth, their sense of identity is inexorably linked to the diminishing island of darkness in a sea of traffic and lights within the most densely populated state in the nation - New Jersey.
The Pine Barrens film is an epic tone-poem, where raging forest fires and crackling campfires generate rebirth of the physical ecology and the identity of the land and its inhabitants. It is a celebration of nature and a portrait of a particular place, but one that casts doubt on its know-ability and our ability to discern reality from superstition. The Pine Barrens explores the symbiotic yet sometimes destructive relationship between man and nature. Through moments with individuals spanning several years, it reveals the influence of place on identity during a period of gradual loss of both a way of life and the environment that gave birth to it.
Since 2012, short, evolving work-in-progress versions of The Pine Barrens have been screened with a live score by The Ruins of Friendship Orchestra, making the project unfixed and semi-improvised, emphasizing the experience of our changing relationship to place and the natural world over time. #ThePineBarrens #NatureAndIdentity #Ecopoetry #EnvironmentalFilm #MythAndReality #NewJerseyWilderness #TonePoemFilm #NatureVsMan #FireAndRebirth #FolkloreAndLand #landscapecinema #experimentaldocumentary #TheRuinsOfFriendshipOrchestra #ChangingNature #EcologyAndCulture #PlaceAndMemory #CinematicNature #ModernMythmaking #visualpoetry

I've been thinking a lot about artistic identity. I'm posting more drawings because I'm trying to be easier on myself. The work that brings me satisfaction and calmness on most days is on its own trajectory, separate from the work that I usually think I want to be known for, which is a world apart from the work I actually get paid for. What brings me happiness is all over the map and as scattered and unpredictable as what I feel is "successful" art. I have a lot of thoughts about this that I might share later, but I wonder if many of the other artists I know struggle with this as well.
