We all know about studio drumming, whether you are recording from home or in a commercial studio, but how has it evolved and what was it like throughout the years? 1. 1950s - 1960s, Earl Palmer in sessions for songs like "Tutti Frutti" and "Long Tall Sally". Mono overhead was the main form of recording isolated drums since tape machines had very little channels and most people listened on mono devices. 2. Early 1970s, Keith Moon in a session using the Glyn Johns Method. Stereo was becoming desired in recordings at this point and so the drums became something to record in stereo. Tape machines still did not have many channels so a two mic set up seemed to work best to have space for the whole band. 3. Late 1970s, Ringo Starr in the studio recording on a 4 mic set up. Glyn Johns method seemed to still be preferred here but with addition of a kick mic and snare mic. 4. 1980s - 1990s, This kit features many mics. As the 80's and 90's evolved drum room mics and close mics became essential. Every drum would typically have a close mic, and room mic techniques began growing. 5. 2020s, @marshalldrums tracking at east west for @billieeilish . Since the early 2000's different variations of this have been around; individual close mics, three overheads, Individual cymbal mics (for hat and ride), two room mic pairs, sub kick and crotch mic. Nowadays you could see any variety of these set ups in action, at the studio or at home with how flexible audio is today. #studiodrums #drumhistory #drumchannel
