Co-regulation: General preference to have someone around to comfort or talk to when stressed. It helps to calm down.
Its helpful to understand how we respond to stressful situations and communicate our needs to the important people in our lives in any given moment, and also understand others preferences so we can help relieve their suffering when they are in distress. In therapies for anxiety, we talk so much about strategies to reduce stress, but how we receive comfort is an important piece of healing within a network of relationship, connection, and community. Co-regulation can be a tool for healing, with the right person and at an appropriate time.
