Last year, I adopted Judy from a shelter. She wasn’t the prettiest or the most outgoing dog there. While the others were getting all the attention, she was the one quietly being overlooked. Somehow that was exactly why I chose her.
It’s hard to believe a whole year has already passed since she came home with us.
The timid little girl who arrived skinny, patchy-haired and with terrible teeth has slowly transformed into a happy little dog with bright eyes, a fluffy coat, a healthier body and just a little more confidence in the world. She’s always gentle with her big brother Hamish. She never fights over food and always so polite with him.
Thank you for trusting us Judy. I hope you’ll continue to live happily with us for many more years, always healthy, safe and loved.
Looking back at my memories today, I realised it has already been 15 years since my last day working at the SPCA Hong Kong.
The SPCA was my very first job after graduation, and I stayed there for more than five years. I started out knowing almost nothing, and eventually became the vet in charge of the Sai Kung clinic. Those years shaped me enormously, both professionally and personally.
My connection with the SPCA actually began back in my first year of vet school (a story for another time). I started as a kennel keeper, cleaning cages and caring for animals, then gradually moved on to helping as a veterinary assistant before officially becoming a veterinarian after graduation. I truly learned everything from the ground up.
Back then, there were far fewer veterinary clinics in Hong Kong, and the SPCA was already one of the city’s largest and most respected animal welfare organisations and veterinary groups. Working there always felt like a privilege.
Even today, many vets in Hong Kong once worked at the SPCA. I’ve always thought of it as the “Shaolin Temple” of Hong Kong’s veterinary world. If you were willing to work hard and learn, you would come out capable of handling almost anything.
It was also one of the toughest places to work. The workload, surgeries, and variety of cases were relentless, but that also meant the learning opportunities were endless. I was fortunate to work alongside vets from all over the world and learn different ways of practising medicine from them.
Those years were exhausting, and there were many times I wanted to quit. But looking back now, I know those five intense years were what made me the vet and person I am today.

“Prevention is better than cure” doesn’t just apply to humans. Many parents often ask: Why does it seem like every vet visit requires so many tests?
Today, Dr. Patrick explains why “testing” is so vital for animals:
🚫 Animals can’t speak: They are masters at hiding pain, and symptoms aren’t always obvious.
🔍 Identifying hidden causes: It’s nearly impossible to diagnose internal issues or inflammation with the naked eye.
💊 Avoid delaying treatment: Early detection significantly increases the chances of recovery.
Dr. Patrick’s reminder: Don’t wait when your furkid is sick. Seeking early medical advice and supporting necessary check-ups is the most responsible way to care for them.

Gotta visit old friends while in the UK! Haven’t seen these boys in six years. They’ve grown into fine young men. Even though it was a quick one-night stay, I’m so happy to see them doing so well here. ❤️Thank you for the big feast as well! 😋😋
