Recently my friend @robtygett was going through some files and found this letter he wrote to his parents in Dec 1999 asking for permission to travel from St. Luis to Milwaukee for our Millennial Dawn NYE event. It doubled as his final paper for freshman seminar called “Long strange trips” (the teacher was an acid head). It’s long, but I’ve read it several times and it’s like a 90s rave time capsule. The details about the event and why it meant so much to him are reminders of how things were so new and almost innocent. Having to explain what it was all about because "rave" wasn’t mainstream yet, but using the word “party” instead, just in case they knew. I can only imagine how many times these sort of conversations happened back in the day. Having said that, I’m sure there were probably more conversations asking for forgiveness than for permission lol. The crazy thing to think about is that NYE was the final event of the 90s. The Y2Kers at the time thought it could be the last event ever. We had close to 6500 people rave on like it was end times.
