In the past week, two parents and two twentysomethings reached out to me about how hard it is to make friends in young adulthood. It’s easy to feel like, as a parent, you need to fix this. Or, as a twentysomething, that something is wrong with you. The truth is, the 20s are some of the loneliest years of life. Friends are life support, but they can be surprisingly hard to come by as people move, schedules change, and building close friendships takes more time than most of us realize. In my latest Substack, I share 20 things to know about why it’s normal to struggle with finding friends in your 20s and what exactly you can do about it. It’s Mental Health Awareness Month, and one thing I want twentysomethings to know is this: having a hard time in your twenties does not automatically mean something is wrong with you. Your twenties are demanding because they are a decade of enormous change and transition. Therapy can be incredibly helpful, but finding the right therapist matters. As a clinical psychologist, professor, and author who has specialized in twentysomethings for more than 20 years, here are 10 things I want young adults to know before they start looking. . . . . #twentysomethings #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #therapy #megjay

For many twentysomethings, Mother’s Day can bring gratitude, grief, love, distance, confusion, longing- or all of it at once. Some of you are celebrating with your mom or a mother figure. Some are missing them. Some are navigating complicated relationships. Some are becoming mother figures in your own way, while still figuring yourselves out too. Days like today can hold a lot at the same time, and that’s okay. Whatever this day looks like for you, you are not alone. . . . . #twentysomethings #mothersday #definingdecade #mentalhealth #megjay

Your twenties are the defining decade of adulthood. This is not my opinion. These are the facts. - Eighty percent of life’s most defining moments happen by about age 35. - Your learning curve in your twenties predicts your earning curve in your thirties and beyond. - More than half of people meet their partner by 30. - Personality changes more during your twenties than at any other time in life. Yes you have time to figure it out. But it takes time to figure it out. So get out there and get going today. . . . . #twentysomethings #definingdecade #college #mentalhealth #megjay

You’ve all heard me say it so many times: on average, young adults will have nine different jobs by age 37 and work is the single biggest driver of growth and change. Yet, you’re probably also hearing that finding work is tough right now, whether you’re on your first job or your ninth. As parents, you may wind up being the default career coach for your twentysomethings. So, in my latest Substack, I asked one of the best career development specialists I know to share the practical steps she takes to help young adults build confidence, momentum, and meaningful work. Her name is Liana Knudsen, LPC, MA, CPCC, and she works virtually with twentysomethings around the country, including some of my own clients and kids. 🔗Read my latest Substack, “Couch to Career in 5 Steps.” (Link in IG story) . . . . #twentysomethings #college #parenting #substack #megjay

It’s something that helps them understand what comes next. Hear what twentysomethings have to say about The Defining Decade. . . . . #twentysomethings #college #definingdecade #mentalhealth #megjay

One of the most important things I tell recent grads is this: Your twenties are not about choosing one thing forever. They are about building identity capital, gaining real experience, and meeting new people that move your life forward. So get out there and get started on the life you want. You’ll get to make choices–at work and in love–again and again. . . . . #twentysomethings #mentalhealth #megjay #graduation #college

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, so it’s a good time to hear this: People feel happier and healthier as they age. Feeling bad now doesn’t mean you’ll always feel bad. Feeling stuck today doesn’t mean you’ll feel stuck tomorrow. . . . . #mentalhealth #twentysomethings #megjay #mentalhealthawarenessmonth #college
