Please welcome Kurt Brecht to Blackhouse Records Limited.
Known to most as the lead vocalist and principal lyricist of Dirty Rotten Imbeciles (D.R.I.), he is known as the front man of one of the very first bands responsible for the crossover thrash genre. Brecht saw a very busy schedule with the band in the late 80’s through the early 90’s. During very rare moments of downtime while on the road, Kurt transitioned his writings to book form. After forming Dirty Rotten Publishing, he produced a total of four works; “Wh**e Stories”, “The 30 Day Dia**hea Diet Plan”, “See the Loud Feeling”, and “Notes from the Nest.” These books would see first and second print runs with the band selling at live shows and their mail order. In the late 90’s, all four books went out of print and ultimately faded into obscurity. Copies pop up on Ebay and Amazon every once in a while, however it is very seldom, and they sell before you can blink, usually for large sums of money.
Fast-forward to 2025: D.R.I.’s fan base continues to stretch across the globe to this day, and Kurt’s books have remained in high demand since their initial release. With some archive retrieval and reconstruction from the original pages and artwork, all four books will be available for the first time in 25 years. More details to be announced soon, including pre-order details, book images, and some other surprises in the works. Stay tuned.

My new Crossover photography exhibition at the Punk Rock Museum opens April 24
FAST AS HELL. LOUDER THAN BOTH
I didn’t set out to document a genre. I was documenting what was happening in front of me.
In the mid-1980s, something shifted. Hardcore bands were playing faster than metal bands. Metal bands were getting heavier than punk. The scenes that once felt separate began to overlap. Metal and punk bands started to share bills. Flyers told the story before anyone wrote about it.
People grew out their hair. The guitar solo came back. The volume went up.
No one called it “crossover” yet.
I was in clubs, theaters, and rehearsal spaces when the tempo accelerated, and the weight of the sound changed. What I photographed wasn’t a marketing category. It was a cultural convergence happening in real time.
These images were not made with hindsight. They were made in the moment, before the industry defined it, before nostalgia softened it.
Hardcore brought velocity. Metal brought density. Together, they created something louder than both.
I was there when the lines blurred.
These photographs are my witness.

It isn’t often we tour almost all Port cities like we do here in Central and South America. Figured it would be a good chance to pull the old DRI yacht out of mothballs. Actually saving quite a bit of money on flights and way more fun! JK
There will be some awesome D.R.I. Limited edition merch available at all of our Brazilian shows with tour back prints. The shirts came out great! Several designs as well as patches, stickers, pins etc…
