The hoops start out as 16 gauge gold wire with a smaller ear wire on one end and a tube it fits in on the other. The wire is then hammered flat so the width varies a bit, but generally measures around 3.5 mm wide and 0.2 mm thin. The cool part about gold, as opposed to other metals like silver, is that hammering a gold wire flat results in a very flexible but strong hoop. They are light and tough, have no strength side to side so they can be pulled wide apart and they will spring back in place.
