The barbershop is a cornerstone of the Black male experience. It is a space where tradition, mentorship, and real conversation shape perspective, sharpen character, and build community. It is where knowledge is passed down, expectations are set, and accountability is reinforced, values that mirror the very foundation of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
Rooted in the spirit of Manly Deeds, Scholarship, and Love for All Mankind, this spring we chose to honor that experience. It has helped shape our lives and played a role in developing these men as they prepare to enter and uphold the standard of Alpha.
At the same time, this is a tribute to Richmond, Virginia, a city rich in history, culture, and legacy. From neighborhoods like Jackson Ward to barbershops across the city, Richmond has long been a place where Black men gather, grow, and lead. This line stands as a reflection of that tradition, built by the community, for the community, and ready to carry it forward.
