UPDATE!!!!
CANCER DOES NOT ANNOUNCE 📢 ITSELF.
The Ekubo family has now released a statement confirming that he died from metastatic kidney cancer, not liver cancer, as had previously been widely reported by various media outlets.
While this clarification matters, the broader message in my previous post remains the same, that many cancers especially those in hidden organs can grow quietly for months, before becoming particularly obvious. It is also possible that the cancer had metastasized (spread) to the liver, which may explain why earlier reports described his illness as liver cancer. In this situations, the original cancer is still classified as kidney cancer, even though it has affected other organs.
Possible symptoms of kidney cancer include:
✳️Blood in the urine
✳️Persistent lower back pain
✳️Unexplained weight loss
✳️Constant unexplained tiredness
✳️A lump or swelling in the abdomen
Kidney cancer is not always preventable, but healthier lifestyles and seeking prompt medical advice for unusual symptoms remains important.

CANCER DOES NOT ANNOUNCE 📢 ITSELF!
Alex Ekubo was an extremely talented young man. He lit up our screens in many nollywood movies, and was known for his charisma and unforgettable screen presence. One of my personal favourites was the movie, ‘Afamefuna’.
At 40, he is dead from Liver Cancer. A shocking, tragic loss! From the outpouring of tributes on social media, he appears to have been very family-oriented, God-loving, and loved by many. I pray God comforts his mother, family, friends and fans.
His death is another stark reminder that cancer does not discriminate by age, fame or status.
Liver cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide.
Many people die from liver cancer each year because many cases are diagnosed at advanced stages (III & IV) when treatment options are limited. Liver cancer is one of the most preventable cancers, however, on the flip side, it is also one of the most difficult to treat.
As the Liver is a hidden body organ, symptoms often go unnoticed until it is too late.
Possible warning symptoms of this cancer may include:
✳️Constant unexplained tiredness
✳️Unexplained weight loss
✳️Persistent abdominal pain or swelling
✳️Yellowing of the eyes or skin (jaundice) and;
✳️Loss of appetite.
The encouraging news is that many liver cancers are preventable:
✳️Please vaccinate against hepatitis B virus (HBV)
✳️Get tested and if positive, get treated for HBV and HCV
✳️Limit alcohol intake
✳️Maintain a healthy weight
✳️Seek medical advice for ANY unusual symptoms.
As Alexx Ekubo’s legacy lives on through his movies; may his passing inspire more awareness about cancer prevention, early detection, and timely treatment.

CANCER IS NOT CONTENT.
It is not a strategy, and it is never a Lie to tell.
For 15 years, I have worked in the cancer space, supporting patients, designing and implementing cancer research studies and advocating for better outcomes across a health system that is already stretched thin.
The recent case involving Blessing Okoro where she has allegedly falsely claimed a diagnosis of stage 4 breast cancer and forged a medical report to solicit money from the public is not just an abuse of trust, it is painful and dangerous.
In Nigeria, approximately 1 in 4 female cancers are breast cancer with many diagnosed late ( i.e stages III/IV), with poor survival outcomes. I have seen women fight for their lives, sat with families that have made impossible financial decisions and joined communities rallying to support women who genuinely need cancer treatment.
This is not a story you borrow for sympathy or exploit for financial gain!
We have seen the global consequences of this before, Belle Gibson the Australian Wellness content creator who falsely claimed to have brain cancer and built a wellness empire around lies, including dangerous narratives around ‘natural cures’ like apple cider vinegar.
Fraud like this makes people doubt real patients, undermines legitimate fund raising efforts and erodes trust that genuine patients depend on to survive.
We must do better as a society:
✴️ Verify before amplifying
✴️ Support only credible and verified cases
✴️ And hold people accountable for exploiting public empathy.
As a member of the @nigeriancancer_society I am glad to hear that a formal petition by the NCS has been made to EFCC. I call on Nigerian authorities to fully investigate this case, with severe consequences, if confirmed, not just for justice but as a deterrent.
Faking cancer isn’t just fraud, it’s a betrayal of every patient fighting to survive!
All Thanks be to God, for Giving us Victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!

May the Joy of the Resurrection and the Victory he won today guide our paths and grant us victory in every aspect of our lives.
Happy Easter ❤️💐🙏🏼
I was recently invited to speak at the International Women’s Day event hosted by Guaranty Trust Bank.
The Theme Give to Gain: Investing in Women’s Health- highlights an important truth, when organisations invest in the health and wellbeing of women, they empower strong leadership, greater productivity and more resilient communities. I commend @gtbank for doing exactly that!
From general wellness checks and cancer screening to conversations around mental health, prioritising women’s health is not just a personal choice, but also a societal and economic necessity.
My message was simple but urgent: Women must give attention to their health in order to gain strength, time and the opportunity to keep supporting others, raising families and remain highly productive in their careers.
Women give so much every day.
But sometimes the most powerful thing we can do…is give to ourselves.
Because when women thrive, everyone gains.
