Using our free instrument Dreamer to bring together and mangle loops from “Big Wide Drums” with a melody from @hand.habits Loop Pack, and a lapsteel rhythmic loop from @christinebougie . Groei adds a frenetic shaker accompaniment, and the whole thing feels reminiscent of 90’s jungle but a little sloppier. Playing the loops live on Dreamer is easy and fun on any type of midi keyboard or pads.
One of our favourite pieces of processing gear is the Sherman Filterbank. Used by legendary artists like Radiohead, the Chemical Brothers and many more, this wild saturation/filter/distortion unit is a fully analog playground of musical chaos. Groei provides an evolving rhythmic conversation while the Sherman takes it into a fuzzed and melodic territory through resonances and envelope generated filtering.

Arpeggios are so useful for creating rhythmic excitement and forward motion. We start with the Glasis preset “Hold For Rhythm”, bringing a simple Taishogoto 8th accompaniment, then add Groei and love percussion. Rounding it are arpeggios from the @ericasynths Steampipe, an incredibly flexible and organic sounding instrument that we love.
Groei comes loaded with presets meant to instantly inspire rhythmic ideas, like this one, “Punch Plastic”. Using pieces of LEGO and yogurt containers from the built in sample library, we send the rhythm through the Generation Loss mk2 from our friends @chasebliss , playing the model knob in time to add a sort of envelope filtered/wah effect as in scans through the different types of tape. Drums, shakers, and Buchla Easel Command round it out into a beat that has organic swing and rhythmic interest thanks to Groei.

While Groei is designed as a powerful organic sequencing machine, we’ve made it easy and fun to trigger its sounds via any midi controller. Here we’re finger drumming an unquantized groove, and re-sampling it into the @intellijel Multigrain. We’re then taking just the hihat midi information and using it to trigger the gate function on the Multigrain, which triggers a small snippet the recording we just made. We’re using the morph fader to go back and forth between two different parameters of pitch and size. It’s organic, unpredictable and fun, and captures the organic spirit of what Groei can be inside or outside of the box.

Making static sources into rhythmic tapestries is simple and fun with GROEI. A beautiful soundscape made from Glasis melodies, then processed through the @chasebliss MOOD Mk2 is dropped into four voices of Groei, and then experimentation begins. Play snippets of the loop, large chunks, filter, distort, and generate. The possibilities are endless and immediately musical and fun.
