Beyond cancelling: How can DIY music scenes keep spaces safe from sexual violence?
Please have a read of the link below, especially if you are a promoter, work at a venue, or play in a band. Now more than ever we need to protect the scene and the people within it, it's becoming less and less sustainable to put on gigs and festivals but they are a safe and important space for so many, we can't let a minority ruin that.
From the link below: "The following suggestions have been written by survivors of sexual violence and are informed by principles of restorative justice and prison and police abolitionist movements. It’s a starting point and we need to now do the work."
It's time to center than wants and needs of the victims, of which there are many. Think you don't know a victim of sexual abuse in our scene? You're sorely mistaken. Insidious online debate around cases of abuse within the scene is often more harmful than it is helpful imo.
So this is a very worthwhile read. Safe spaces for all, but especially for women and gender non conforming pals who deserve to enjoy our scene just as much as all the bros who think this doesn't effect them. Time to put in the work.

Saying see ya later to Dreadfest 👋🏻🍺
When I started Dreadfest 6 and a half years ago I was 21, still at uni and had no idea what I was doing, it's been a mad chunk of time since and I'm so grateful for what Dread bloomed into. I got to put on some of my fave bands, make so many mates, and just generally have insane amounts of fun. In the time since I've acquired 2 rapidly growing daughters and am self employed as a doula and Dreadfest just does not fit anymore, so I'm finally bowing out, for reals.
The biggest most eternal amount of gratitude goes to everyone who ever showed up for a dread show, I somehow ended up with the most loyal and lovely bunch of pals showing up every single year and supporting me unconditionally. To all the bands who played, everyone who ever helped out, lent gear, the venues, staff, drivers - thank you for putting up with my chaotic messiness and showing out for me, especially as I haven't always been the most organized promoter (I'm not actually very good at promoting at all, it's been a pure fluke 😂).
Bowing out gracefully* with a v full heart, delish bev and getting to see Oxbow at The Brud who were kind enough to let me help out with putting this gig on - absolutely wild, what a way to stop promoting eh.
P.S soz for being dead soppy, so much more I could write but this is already embarrassing enough haha, big love, see you all around at all the other sick gigs going on in Leeds atm.
P.P.S promotors - start booking more bands with women in ffs 🫠

2 months until DREADFEST IN THE WOODS '23
BUT, unfortunately ticket sales are incredibly low to the point I'm not currently sure the event will be able to go ahead unless sales pick up. As it stands I need to sell around 40-50 more tickets to make the event viable, I simply don't have the means to not get close to breaking even.
I appreciate that there are many factors at play here, it's expensive in a cost of living crisis, it's difficult to get too (and there is nowhere near enough interest in organizing coaches) the line up was announced quite late and isn't as "big" as Leeds Dread line ups. Maybe other personal things going on for people too! So I get it, I'm not trying to guilt trip people into buying tickets, I just want to be transparent ahead of time.
I think as it stands I will give it until the end of the month to see if things pick up! I don't want people to start paying for travel etc and end up out of pocket. If things don't pick up I will have to cancel, if this happens I'll refund people of course and pull together an all dayer for the bands traveling over in Leeds so no one ends up stuck.
Sorry for the big downer of a post, I'm truly grateful for everyone who has supported Dread and understand why this event may not be selling well. If you have any feedback on what would help or entice you to grab a ticket then let me know!
P.S I'll still announce the rest of the line up this month too anyway but we will see what happens.
