Cubone wears a skull, generally understood to be its deceased mother’s, as a helmet for protection, comfort, and to honor her memory, often crying mournfully with its tears staining the mask. On nights with a full moon, Cubone perceives a likeness of its mother’s face in the moon. This sight brings back painful memories, causing it to cry and howl in sorrow.
This poor little guy was made for a Pokemon group show for Gallery1988 in Los Angeles.

This is a repost of my take on the Mari Lwyd: a Welsh wassailing folk custom that involves an ornate horse’s skull on a pole carried from house to house. This is Mari Lwyd. She goes from door to door accompanied by an entourage of characters (like Punch and Judy), demanding entrance into peoples homes, which leads to a back-and-forth exchange of wit and rhymes with the person that lives there. Like a rap-battle in Welsh. She demands entrance through verse, while the people inside must sing back with excuses as to why she can’t come in. If those inside the house can’t respond, or give up, Mari and her crew enter the house and raid the pantry, steal the booze, etc. In exchange - the household is said to have good luck for the year.
The Illustration was the exterior of my 2023 holiday card. The outside had a hand-written Welsh poem, and the inside of the card read a simple present: “For you: a poem - should you find Mari Lwyd wassailing at your door this winter season.”

I feel that it’s always important give a sense of history to your work, to show that there’s story before your story. It’s an easy (and fun) way to add an extra glaze of depth to your world building.

This was for a fun project that I was only on for a short stint called “The True History of OZ.” This was a schematic I drew and designed for the Tin Man’s arm. I loved trying to figure out the mechanics vs logical biological functionality.
