I was pleased to talk to @bbcnews about recognising the signs and symptoms of a allergic reaction and how to react if you / or someone youâre with is experiencing an allergic reaction, whether that be mild or severe to help enhance public awareness.
đFollow my account for short, bitesize videos as I answer questions asked by followers surrounding childrenâs allergies.
Itâs an exciting moment for the allergy community.
Neffy (EurNeffy) is a new nasal spray device for treating severe allergic reactions, and itâs expected to launch in the UK within the coming days.
Whilst Neffy is not a new medicine â itâs a new delivery method to receive adrenaline, offering a needle-free alternative to adrenaline auto injections e.g, EpiPens and Jext devices - itâs a great thing for the allergy community as it will really help people who have an aversion to needles and offers another option for all.
I was delighted that The Allergy Team got to ask Professor Adam Fox for a sneak preview on how to use it, ahead of itâs release.
Adam explains:
1. Hold device with two fingers on the sides and thumb underneath (as shown in video).
2. Place into nostril, pointing straight (not angled).
3. When your fingers touch your nose, press firmly with your thumb until dose is delivered.
4. Call an ambulance (999 â and mention there is an Anaphylaxis â pronounced âana- fill-axisâ)
5. If symptoms arenât improving, give a second dose after 5 minutes (using the second Neffy device) and into the same nostril.
Positioning: As with auto-injectors, the child should sit or lie in a safe position (legs raised if possible).
Although EurNeffy is expected to start to be distributed in the next few weeks, in practice it will take time to be prescribed to patients, and doctors expect EpiPen and Jext pens will remain the main devices in circulation.

Do you have a Food allergy? Can you complete a survey for research? đĽđ°đĽđĽJessica, a student at Leeds Beckett University, is conducting research to better understand how the allergen community feels about the proposed expansion of the current 14 mandated allergens in UK regulations.
If youâre 18 or over and:
đHave a food allergy, or Care for someone who does your insight would be incredibly valuable.
đThe survey:
Takes around 10â15 minutes to complete and is open until Sunday 31 May
Explores real attitudes and experiences that could help shape future allergen policy.
This is a timely and relevant piece of research for the sector, and participation from those directly affected is essential.
If youâre able to take part, your contribution would be greatly appreciated.

It was really exciting to be at the @allergyfreefromshow in Birmingham yesterday and have an opportunity to talk about options for people with food allergies. This meant talking about allergen avoidance and ensuring an accurate diagnosis, as well as Oral Immunotherapy, biologics such as Omalizumab, and emerging treatments such as Sublingual Immunotherapy, together with a brief look at the pipeline of new treatments that are coming out.
It was also lovely to speak to so many people afterwards about the challenges theyâve been facing.
I also got to have a fantastic 30-minute conversation in the podcast zone, with Tanya Ednan-Laperouse OBE to talk about the amazing work that her charity have been doing @natashasfoundation . And the legacy of her daughter Natasha, who tragically died from anaphylaxis to sesame. Tanya is an incredible source of inspiration for the whole allergy community.

It was a pleasure to sit down with journalist, author, and cook @bexseal for a talk about allergies and her newly released excellent book titled: Irritated: The Allergy Epidemic and What We Can Do About It. Itâs an engaging and accessible read that thoughtfully explores the topic from every important angle. Iâll be recommending it to patients who want to better understand their allergies.
The full talk from this conversation will be shared very soon.đŁď¸đŁď¸đď¸

Yesterday was an extremely important day for the allergy community thanks to the incredible advocacy of Paul Carey - and his family, and Iâd very much like to thank them for that.
Paul, father of Owen Carey who tragically lost his life to anaphylaxis nearly 10 years ago.
As the result of his hard work and inspirational persistence, they are making a change that will have a huge impact on the safety of the entire allergy community. And for that, he deserves our profound gratitude.
We very much hope that Minister Eagle fulfils her commitments to take this forward and does so within as quick a time frame as possible, because any delay is simply leaving people with allergies at continued risk.

I was privileged earlier on Monday to meet the Right Honourable Angela Eagle MP, Minister for Food Security and Rural Affairs - together with Paul Carey and his family and colleagues from Anaphylaxis UK. This was to discuss Owenâs Law, which relates to upfront written allergens present on menus or in some other suitable form without the need to be asked in restaurants and similar outlets.
This has been a major ask of the National Allergy Strategy, but itâs been actively campaigned for by Owenâs family for almost 10 years since his tragic death from anaphylaxis after eating a burger that was thought to contain plain grilled chicken but in fact had been marinated in buttermilk.
We were all delighted that the minister was extremely clear that she was fully committed to delivering Owenâs Law and ensuring that the provision for the written presence of allergens, was made part of statutory regulations through Parliament.
There are some challenges around timing, as it had been hoped that this would be in place before the 10th anniversary of Owenâs death. But the important thing is the outcome and that itâs reached as quickly as possible.
And the minister was absolutely clear that she would be prioritising this. She went on to instruct the officials of the Food Standards Agency and DEFRA to work together to make sure that this is prioritised.

Delighted to have visited the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm yesterday as the external examiner for the PhD thesis of the impressive Carina Uhl. Her research on peanut oral immunotherapy in young children demonstrated excellent outcomes alongside a strong safety profile.
It was also encouraging to learn that the team here - previously the only one in Sweden offering this treatment - has received the excellent news that the new Swedish national guidelines now recommend its use. This development should mean much better access for children across the country.

Our understanding about allergy more recently is that the way that many factors like diet and environment influence our gut bacteria, what we call our microbiome, seem to be increasing our tendency to develop allergic responses to the outside world.
And as a result, weâve got this huge amount of allergy in the UK. And frustratingly, and certainly compared to other developed healthcare economies, the provision of specialist services, and in fact even knowledge amongst GPs, for example, at managing allergy is not as good as it could be.
Why the National Allergy Strategy matters:
đ39% of children, 30% of adults affected; over one-quarter of the UK population
đMost GPs have no allergy training despite 1 in 3 patients having allergic conditions
đMultiple reports from the Royal College of Physicians and APPG for Allergy highlight service gaps
đRepeated tragedies exposing system failures in schools, restaurants and healthcare settings
đPostcode lottery of access; poorer outcomes in deprived and ethnic minority communities
Without national coordination, allergy remains fragmented across multiple sectors with no clear ownership, leading to policy gaps, inconsistent protection and preventable harm.
I was grateful to be on BBC Breakfast yesterday talking about this.

Yesterday marked an important milestone for the allergy community, and for me personally, as we launched the National Allergy Strategy in Parliament.
During the evening, I spoke alongside Sharon Hodgson MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary at the Department of Health and Social Care.
It was a valuable opportunity to shine a light on the many areas where progress is urgently needed: from improving medical care and strengthening policy, to better allergy management and increased awareness across education, catering, retail, transport, and beyond.
I very much hope the strategy gets the media spotlight it deserves.
