I was working around the Met Gala earlier today and heard people screaming when they saw people stepping out of cars to walk into a museum. My version of this is randomly getting to hang with my friend Kara and her husband last year in Arizona. Other photos are from Monument Valley, which is a place that made me feel some crazy things. Everyone should see it once.
My friend Robert Davis has a show opening this Thursday at Broadway Gallery. (375 Broadway) The space is really great for the work and the work is really, really good. You should go see it when you can, you won’t regret it. @bobsonofdavis
Tokyo is the best city. There isn’t even a second place. There’s a million layers on every block and I think you could spend 100 lifetimes and not catch it all. Every building has at least 10 Easter Eggs behind hidden doors on every floor. The best of everything and pretty easy to navigate once you understand the rules. This is my third time there and I think I’ve seen about 1%. Go there, get lost, have fun.
Osaka is a wild little city. Great food, interesting sights, and weird alleys to get lost. I wish I had a few more days to explore there, but makes me want to go back. You can get Kobe beef and Tako Yaki on every block. There is insane coffee that, if you’d really like, you can get a cup of premium Joe for upwards of $150/ cup. Not sure who that’s for, but it’s available. I feel like I was transported to 1990, in the best way possible. 10/10 would try again.
I went up to Nara on Jan 24th this year. It’s about a 45 minute train ride from Osaka or Kyoto and is known for their parks that are full of sacred deer and UNESCO Heritage sites that include a few temples, including one that houses a giant Buddha that is around 50ft tall and ridiculously impressive. The deer are pretty funny and you can hand feed them these crackers that vendors sell along the paths. They will bow to you and you give them a reward….hut they’re also sneaky little fuckers and will definitely chase you down or try to eat anything else that you have on you as well. I stopped in this coffee shop called Chami on a recommendation and it was really damn good coffee and pastries, but talking with the barista I learned that I had actually come up to Nara on a day where they have a fire celebration called Wakakusa Yamayaki where they start with some fireworks and then light the whole damn mountain on fire. It’s bonkers. Anyhow: Nara rules. Go up there for a day if you’re in Osaka or Kyoto and feed some sacred deer, see some insane temples, and enjoy ridiculous coffee.
