„Ein Sommertag, im Taiwan der 1980er. Saftige Melonenstücke werden in einem Mixer zu Saft püriert. Die Teenagerin Ming löst ein Ticket an der Kinokasse und gibt sich ihrem sexuellen Erwachen hin.
Birdy Wei-Ting Hungs fragmentarische Erzählung „A Brighter Summer Day“ ist eine vielschichtige Hommage ans Giallokino der italienischen 1970er:
feministisch, essayistisch, klug – gespickt mit zahlreichen Filmverweisen (von „All the colours of the dark“ von Sergio Martino bis „Profondo Rosso“ von Dario Argento).
Unter Verwendung präziser Farbkarten und der Verkettung der schönsten Rottöne aus der Wiege des modernen Horrorfilms verdichtet sich „A Brighter Summer Day“ narrativ aufgebrochen zu einem assoziativen Bilderrausch.
Mit ihrer facetten- und nuancenreichen Dramaturgie verzaubert Birdy Wei-Ting Hung in ihrem Abschlussfilm sowohl ihre Protagonistin als auch uns als Publikum.

I wasn't planning on making another short film but I get a lot of my ideas in the shower and one day there was a mosquito in there. It really bugged me. The idea buzzed in my mind from there and it was like a sign from the film gods that I had to make it. I was getting the itch to make something new anyway cuz I love making stuff.
