10 years ago this month, I graduated dental school. But really, this journey started when I was 16 years old working in a dental office with big dreams and no idea how far they’d take me. In 2012, I got into @nyudentistry while sitting in my parents’ kitchen in my @vspink robe and my beloved @michaelkors ceramic watch (no manicure…not much has changed😂). Even then, I knew I wanted to become the best dentist I could possibly be, to have my own office in NYC, to do right by every single patient, and to create work that is aesthetic, functional, and truly life-changing. Here we are a decade later. After lots of hard work and never giving up, every single one of those dreams has became reality. So grateful to every patient, my @maisonbedental team and my partner/work wife @ellenkatzdds . Your dentist might be part of your fertility AND pregnancy team… and people aren’t talking about it enough 🪥👀 Loved this fascinating discussion with @dr_bridget @ellenkatzdds @maisonbedental on how our oral health can impact our microbiome and risk of cardiovascular disease and pregnancy complications. We treat oral health like it’s separate from the rest of the body. It’s not. And when it comes to getting pregnant AND staying pregnant, the connection is real. Here’s what matters: Gum disease = chronic inflammation 🧵 Gingivitis and periodontitis release inflammatory signals that don’t stay local… they circulate. That systemic inflammation can interfere with implantation… and pregnancy. For women trying to conceive 🤍 Gum disease has been linked to delayed conception… with some studies showing it can take months longer to get pregnant. For men 🧬 Oral bacteria can impact sperm quality… lowering count, motility, and normal shape. There’s even a link to erectile dysfunction via impaired blood flow. And during pregnancy… this is where it really matters 👇 Poor gum health has been associated with higher risks of preterm birth and low birth weight. The same inflammatory markers and oral bacteria can reach the placenta and amniotic environment, potentially triggering early labor. The takeaway: Your mouth is not a silo. It’s a gateway. If you’re trying to conceive or already pregnant, oral health is part of the bigger picture of reducing inflammation and optimizing outcomes. Brush. Floss. See your dentist regularly.
