Africa is where modern humans began. This is why the continent holds the richest genetic record of humanity ever discovered — a phenomenon scientists describe as the “serial founder effect.” 🧬🌍 But the real question is this: What are the implications of being the most genetically diverse population on earth, yet still underrepresented in global research? What does that mean for medicine, disease research, and the future of global health? I’ll talk about that in Part 2. Did you know the reason behind Africa’s genetic diversity before now?

Africa may not have had the sequencing capacity to meet the infectious disease and overall research demand a few years ago. But the story has changed significantly. What changed? COVID-19 forced a turning point. African scientists and public health institutions decided the continent could no longer depend on shipping samples overseas before outbreaks could be understood. What followed was one of the most important scientific capacity shifts in modern African public health. And the world benefited from it. This is more than scientific progress. It is a shift from dependence to genomic sovereignty — exactly what Africa needs. Follow for more insights into genomics research, public health innovation, and why African genomic data matters. 🌍🧬 #explorepage #genomicsresearch #genomicsafrica #genomics

Missing from the database series - 001 The tool that predicts disease from your DNA was built almost entirely on European data. For African patients, that means less accurate predictions and missed red flags. The fix? African genomic data. African genomes have shorter LD (linkage disequilibrium) blocks. This means that genetic variants are more spread out, making it easier to pinpoint exact disease-causing variants with precision no other population data can match. The most powerful data for this tool exists in Africa, but it is missing from the database. We need to fix this. #genomics #genomicmedicine #genomicscience #genomicresearch

Global research is failing African populations. With less than 3% representation in global genetic databases, we are faced with real consequences: poorer medication response, less accurate diagnostics, and weaker disease prediction tools for African populations. This isn’t just an equity issue. It’s a scientific one. By underrepresenting the most genetically diverse populations in the world, we’re limiting how much we truly understand about human biology and disease. That gap affects everyone, but it affects Africans the most. If you’re curious about anything genomics, drop your questions in the comments. I just might turn them into a video.

Easter is super special. A time to bring the essence of our faith to the fore. And it is this: that Christ came, lived, died—and most importantly, rose. We know the sufferings of Christ. But we also know, and rejoice in, the glory that followed. The Creator took on flesh and dwelt among His creation. He offered Himself as the Lamb—the precious Lamb slain to take away the sins of the world. Yours. Mine. He died. But the story did not end there. He rose! Because He rose, death is defeated. Because He rose, we are free from condemnation. Because He rose, the grave has lost its hold. Because He rose, we dance on an empty grave. Because He rose, we have the promise of eternal life in Him. What a joy! What a victory! “O death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?... But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” - 1 Corinthians 15:55–57

Another year is coming to an end. And with the end of a year comes so many emotions: anxiety, panic, fatigue, and flickering hope. These emotions are valid. It is okay to feel them. As much as they are, it is equally important to remember — to hold on to the reason for it all. The reason why we wake up each day. The reason why we keep doing. The reason why we keep going. It is Him who says do. It is Him who says go. You must stay on this. As we step into 2026, I hope you trust in the One who sent you. I hope you keep finding reasons to show up. Or more accurately, I hope you always remember the one reason why you must. On the good and maybe more importantly, the bad days. I pray you stay decided. It is a good thing to be passionate, but a better thing to be decided. And on days when it is difficult to remember, I hope you pray. I hope you stay trusting. I hope you have people who speak life to you; who remind you that He who sent you will not leave you. So, here’s a toast to 2026: my audacity year. ”I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses.“ ‭‭Joshua‬ ‭1‬:‭3‬ ‭NIV Cc: @ebeletheservant ❤️

I decided last minute that I was going to attend @tedxabuja . It was a 10/10 experience that was worth capturing into a post. Which of these resonate with you? P.S I wrote a full article about it. Link is in my bio.

Figured that these deserve a special spot on the feed. Stepped out looking like a million bucks in my @reeyahrahim two piece for my talk at the PHA4GE 2025 Conference x IPSN Global Partners Forum. Thanks to PHA4GE for giving me a platform to talk about what we are building @cogsayr.africa — a networking and capacity building platform connecting young genomics enthusiasts across Africa. An overall great time and great conversations with great people. Wouldn’t trade it for anything❤️ PHA4GE - Public Health Alliance for Genomic Epidemiology IPSN - WHO International Pathogen Surveillance Network #PHA4GECon2025

CoGSAYR Africa at the PHA4GE Conference × IPSN Global Partners' Forum 2025✨. It has been almost a year of building and driving youth-led genomic research in Africa at CoGSAYR. This week, we are excited to be sharing our work and telling the story of our impact at the PHA4GE Conference × IPSN Global Partners' Forum 2025 hosted in Cape Town, South Africa by the Public Health Alliance for Genomic Epidemiology (PHA4GE) @pha4ge , International Pathogen Surveillance Network (IPSN), WHO Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence @who and the World Health Organization African Region @who_africa . The theme for this year's conference is "Data for Action: Overcoming Challenges and Seizing Opportunities in Public Health Genomics", and Dr Gladys Zugwai Ibrahim @dr.gladysibrahim , our Founder and Executive Director, was invited to share how CoGSAYR Africa is scaling Africa's genomic workforce capacity through young people. During her presentation, she highlighted the high interest among young Africans in participating in genomic-based research and how this may be an opportunity that is being overlooked in potentially closing the African genetic data gap. Although much remains to be done, we are proud of how far and how well we have come and look forward to continuing to foster growth in genomics in Africa by connecting young genomics enthusiasts with relevant resources and tools needed to thrive in the field. #PH4GECon2025 #IPSNGPF2025 #CoGSAYRAfrica #WorkforceCapacity #GenomicsResearch #PublicHealthGenomics #Africa

I try to put into words how grateful I am for the life I have, but honestly, words fail me. I’m in awe of how beautifully God fathers me. I’m in awe of how He has surrounded me with the most beautiful people. I’m in awe of how He has held my hand through the darkest of nights and the stormiest of days. I’m in awe of how He places things in my hands, things that seem too big for my feeble frame, but supports me all the way. I’m in awe of how He opens doors of favour for me in the unlikeliest of places. I’m in awe of how much He loves me. It is not the most perfect life that I have but it is more beautiful than I could have ever imagined it to be. 25 holds so much promise for me. What a ride the next phase of my life is about to be. Happy birthday to me🎂
